Bid Farewell to the Snake Year's First Month: A Time for Reflection and Renewal

As the last day of the first month of the Snake Year comes to a close, the atmosphere of the Spring Festival is gradually fading away. The Chinese idiom "不出正月都是年" highlights the significance of this period, where people are still immersed in the festive spirit. This year is particularly unique due to the absence of the 30th day of the 12th lunar month, also known as "大年三十" (New Year's Eve), for five consecutive years from 2025 to 2029, a rare phenomenon caused by the calculation rules of the traditional Chinese calendar.

The lunar calendar is based on the cycles of the moon, with each month having either 29 or 30 days. When the last month of the year, "腊月" (the 12th lunar month), has only 29 days, the 30th day of the month does not exist, resulting in the absence of "大年三十". Additionally, the Snake Year is also a "双春年" (Double Spring Year), where two "立春" (Beginning of Spring) festivals occur, one on February 3rd and another on February 4th, 2026. This rare occurrence is due to the lunar calendar's mechanism of setting a leap month to keep it in sync with the solar year.

As people bid farewell to the first month of the year and welcome the new, they are reminded of the rich cultural heritage and complexities of the traditional Chinese calendar. The significance of the last day of the first month serves as a reminder to reflect on the past year, set new goals, and look forward to the opportunities and challenges that the new year brings. With the holidays drawing to a close, people are gearing up to welcome the start of a new year, getting back on track with work and studies, and finding motivation to tackle new challenges.

During this period, the weather forecast predicts a mix of snow and rain in certain regions, with some areas experiencing heavy snowfall, requiring people to plan ahead and dress in layers. Meanwhile, the southern regions can look forward to a warm spell, with temperatures rising by around 10 degrees Celsius over the next few days, making it an ideal time to soak up the sun. As people take to social media to share the signs of spring they're witnessing outside their windows, from budding greenery to melting snow, it's clear that the arrival of spring is a highly anticipated event.

In various regions, the weather is expected to play a significant role in planning outdoor activities. According to weather forecasts, some areas will experience overcast skies interspersed with sunshine, while others will receive light to moderate snow or sleet. Residents and travelers alike are advised to stay informed about the latest weather updates and plan their movements accordingly, taking necessary precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

As the last day of the Snake Year's first month comes to a close, people are filled with anticipation and good wishes for the new year. For those who have worked hard and persevered, the hope is that they will continue to push forward, overcoming obstacles and making the most of their youth. The desire is for the new year to bring more opportunities and challenges, and for individuals to overcome difficulties and achieve their goals and dreams. In the mountainous regions of Shandong, people gather to usher in the new year with traditional customs and festivities, including the tradition of eating specific foods, such as dumplings and fish, which are believed to bring good fortune and prosperity in the coming year.

Professor Wang Jie of the Central Party School notes that the tradition of celebrating the new year has a long history, dating back to the Han Dynasty. The custom of guarding the year, which involves staying up late and burning candles or oil lamps, is a way of bidding farewell to the old year and welcoming the new one. In modern times, while the tradition of staying up all night to guard the year may have faded, the custom of gathering with family and friends on New Year's Eve remains strong. As people come together to share a meal, exchange gifts, and reflect on the past year, they also look to the future with hope and anticipation.

The new year is a time for renewal and rebirth, and the festivities that surround it are a celebration of the cycles of life and the passage of time. Mr. Pan Lusheng, Chairman of the Chinese Folk Artists Association, notes that the Spring Festival is a time for Chinese people to come together and celebrate their heritage and traditions. Despite the many changes and developments that have taken place in modern Chinese society, the Spring Festival remains a deeply meaningful and significant holiday, one that embodies the spirit of perseverance and striving that is at the heart of Chinese culture.
