China Vows to Defend National Interests as US Plans New Tariffs

US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Chinese goods starting from February 1st, sparking a strong response from Beijing. China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reiterated that trade wars and tariff wars have no winners, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning maintaining that China will unswervingly defend its national interests.

The US president's threat comes amidst an ongoing trade dispute between the two nations, with the US seeking to level the playing field and China resisting what it sees as unfair protectionism. Trump has accused China of unfair trade practices, including stealing intellectual property and manipulating its currency, while China has hit back with its own tariffs and accused the US of bullying.

The tensions have had far-reaching consequences, with global markets experiencing significant volatility and concerns growing about the impact on the global economy. China's position on trade wars and tariffs has been consistent, with Beijing repeatedly stressing the need for cooperation and mutually beneficial trade relationships.

Mao Ning emphasized that China will maintain its position and safeguard its national interests. "We have repeatedly stated our position on this issue," she said. "We firmly maintain that trade wars and tariff wars have no winners, and we unwaveringly safeguard our national interests." The spokesperson did not elaborate on specific countermeasures, but made it clear that China will take a firm stance in defending its economic interests.

US President Trump's plan to impose a 25% tariff on Chinese goods is the latest salvo in a long-simmering trade dispute that has seen both sides impose tariffs on each other's goods. The threat comes after Trump announced plans to impose tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada, citing China's failure to address the issue of fentanyl smuggling. However, China has consistently maintained that it has been working to cooperate with the US on the issue, and that such tariffs would be unproductive.

Chinese Ambassador to the US, Liu Pengyu, also stated that "there are no winners in a trade war or tariff war." He emphasized that China believes in the mutual benefits of Sino-US economic and trade cooperation and has always been committed to maintaining the interests of its nation. "We will continue to maintain our position and safeguard our national interests," Mao said. "We are willing to communicate with the US side and resolve differences through dialogue."

The situation remains fluid, with both sides engaging in diplomatic efforts to resolve their differences. As tensions continue to simmer, it remains to be seen whether the US and China can find a way to de-escalate the situation and return to a more cooperative relationship.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning's comments underscore China's long-held stance on the issue of trade wars and tariffs. By stating that there are no winners in such conflicts, China is making it clear that it will not engage in a tariff war with the US. Instead, it will focus on finding mutually beneficial solutions that respect the rules of the market economy and international trade.
