Chinese Foreign Ministry Responds to Ukrainian Lawmaker's Remarks on Assisting US in Conflicts with China, Iran, and Other Nations

# Chinese Foreign Ministry Responds to Ukrainian Lawmaker's Remarks on Assisting US in Conflicts with China, Iran, and Other Nations The Chinese Foreign Ministry recently addressed the remarks made by Ukrainian lawmaker, Gennadiy Druzenko, who stated in an interview with American media that Ukraine would be willing to lend support to the United States in conflicts with China, Iran, and other nations.

The comments sparked a lively debate on Chinese social media platform, Weibo. During a regular press conference on February 26, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, was asked by a TASS reporter about Druzenko's statement. She replied, "I believe the Ukraine crisis provides us with an important lesson, that camp confrontation cannot bring about security." She further added that, "As a responsible major country, China will continue to play a constructive role in promoting political solutions to the Ukraine crisis." Ukraine's political system differs significantly from China's, and Mao Ning pointed out that while Druzenko's statement represents the views of his own party or personal opinions, it does not necessarily reflect the official stance of the Ukrainian government. Discussions on Weibo debated these comments, with some users expressing amusement at Ukraine seemingly offering to take on the United States' alleged enemies, while others criticized what they perceived as Ukraine's insincerity in its public statements, accusing it of not upholding its stance of neutrality in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. One Weibo user typed, "This Ukrainian lawmaker surely must have had a few too many drinks.
Why doesn't Ukraine open up its arms industry to let Russian representatives come and buy from it? And why not also list India who buys Russian oil, on the 'War Supporters' list?" Another user sarcastically commented, "Does the Ukrainian politician think he's a hero who can take on all the world's problems?
They should go fry some calamari in the Middle East instead." Despite this lively debate on social media, the Chinese Foreign Ministry's response to Druzenko's comments remain calm and measured. It reiterates China's commitment to playing a constructive role in finding political solutions to the Ukraine crisis and stresses the importance of avoiding camp confrontation, which it says, "cannot bring about security."
In a separate development, US Ambassador to China, Nicholas Burns, said in an interview with CBS' "60 Minutes" that during the end of the Cold War, the US believed its system had won. He explained that while the Soviet Union indeed had strong military power and nuclear weapons, their economy was very weak and couldn't compete with the US. He further added that China's economy is a challenge to the US. Discussions around the China-US relationship and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict dominated this latest iteration of the Chinese Foreign Ministry press conference. However, unlike the impassioned reaction by Weibo users to Ukraine's alleged offer of support to the US in conflicts with China and others, the Foreign Ministry's response remained focused on its commitment to a political solution to the Ukraine crisis and the need for countries to avoid alignment in conflicts.
Discussions on Weibo, though lively, remain largely confined to the platform. The Chinese Foreign Ministry's official response is measured, demonstrating China's consistent stance of neutrality in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and its commitment to upholding international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter. While the comments made by Druzenko have caused a stir on social media, the Chinese Foreign Ministry's measured and diplomatic response highlights China's continued focus on finding a political solution to the Ukraine crisis. In a tweet from the US Embassy in China, Burns also took the opportunity to address China's stance, stating, "We welcome China to play a constructive role in promoting peace and stability in Ukraine. The US has no hostile intentions towards China, and our two countries can and should work together to address global challenges."
The situation in Ukraine continues to evolve, and the world watches with concern as Russia's invasion of Ukraine enters its sixth week. Both Ukraine and Russia have suffered significant losses, and the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine continues to worsen. The international community, including China, has called for an immediate end to the violence and for all parties to engage in meaningful dialogue to find a political solution to the crisis. As the conflict continues, the world will be watching closely to see how countries like China and the US navigate their complex and multifaceted relationship in this tense international environment. The challenge for both nations will be to find ways to cooperate on areas of mutual interest while managing their differences and disagreements in a responsible and constructive manner.
