Chinese Man Spends $620,000 on Unlicensed Medical Treatments at Hair Salon, Sparks Investigation
A man in China, identified as Mr. Cheng, claims to have spent over 4.3 million yuan (approximately $620,000 USD) at a hair salon in Hefei, Anhui Province, for colon hydrotherapy sessions and acupuncture treatments, only to later discover that the establishment lacked the necessary medical qualifications to provide these services. Mr. Cheng's troubles began in April 2023 when he visited the salon for a haircut and was introduced to the store manager, Chen, who persuaded him to try the services offered by the establishment, including a massage and acupuncture treatment that involved breaking the skin to "detoxify" his body.

Over the course of two years, Mr. Cheng reportedly spent over 4.3 million yuan on these treatments, which included colon hydrotherapy sessions priced at around 30,000 yuan per session, and massages that cost upwards of 500 yuan per session. However, after experiencing adverse health effects, including diarrhea and difficulty healing from the acupuncture wounds, Mr. Cheng discovered that the salon did not possess the necessary medical licenses to provide these treatments. The incident has sparked an investigation by local authorities, including the Market Supervision Administration, Health Department, and Public Security Bureau.
The salon in question has been found to be operating beyond its licensed scope, which only permits it to provide hairdressing services. The responsible person at the salon has refused to comment on the matter, citing ongoing operations and a police report as reasons for their silence. As of July 9, the Market Supervision Administration has confirmed that an investigation is underway, with the Health Department and Public Security Bureau also involved in the case. A spokesperson for the Hefei Economic and Technological Development Zone Market Supervision Administration stated that they have received Mr. Cheng's complaint and are actively investigating the matter in collaboration with the Health and Wellness Department and the Public Security Bureau.
The Health Department is specifically looking into the allegations of illegal medical practices, working in tandem with other agencies to determine the legitimacy of the services provided by the establishment in question. The incident has also sparked heated discussions among netizens, with many expressing confusion and concern over the barber shop's provision of colon hydrotherapy services and its charging standards. Many believe that such behavior constitutes suspected illegal medical practice and false advertising, and are calling on relevant authorities to investigate and take action as soon as possible.
The public's reaction reflects a broader concern about the lack of regulation and oversight in the beauty and healthcare industries, as well as the potential risks and consequences of seeking medical treatments from unqualified providers. Mr. Cheng's case serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of verifying the credentials and qualifications of healthcare providers before receiving treatment. The authorities have assured that they will investigate the matter thoroughly and provide a report once the investigation is complete, and the public is eagerly awaiting the outcome, hoping that decisive action will be taken to protect consumers and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
