Chinese New Year Box Office Boom: Films Score Big on Douban
As the Chinese New Year celebrations continue, the country's movie industry is witnessing a staggering box office performance, with six major films hitting the theaters during the 2025 Spring Festival. The latest data from the National Film Bureau shows that the single-day box office on the first day of the Lunar New Year reached a record-breaking 18.05 billion yuan, with over 35 million people heading to the cinemas. The total box office revenue for the Spring Festival has exceeded 30 billion yuan, and as of February 4, the total box office revenue has surpassed 86 billion yuan.

The release of Douban ratings for the six movies has sparked heated discussions among moviegoers and industry observers, with "Ne Zha 2" leading the pack with an impressive 8.5 score. However, the controversy surrounding the opening scores has also raised concerns about the legitimacy of the scoring system, citing the lack of transparency and potential manipulation by some users. "Tang Detective 1900" and "The Legend of Gods 2: Fire and Water" have received scores of 6.7 and 6.5, respectively. The strong performance of the movies is also reflected in the ticket sales, with "Ne Zha 2", "Detective Chinatown 1990", and "Legend of Deification 2: Fire of the West" ranking as the top three in terms of ticket sales.
According to recent data, "Ne Zha 2" has broken 42 billion yuan in ticket sales, with "Tang Detective 1900" and "The Legend of Gods 2: Fire and Water" following closely, with ticket sales of over 21 billion yuan and 9.6 billion yuan, respectively. The movie's success has been unprecedented, with some predicting it will surpass the ticket sales of "Avengers: Endgame" and become one of the highest-grossing films in Chinese history. Meanwhile, "The Jiaolong Action" has performed poorly, suggesting that audiences prefer family-friendly films during the Spring Festival.

However, not all movies have received the same level of acclaim, with "The Legend of Heroes: The Great" receiving a score of 5.5 on Douban, despite having high scores on other platforms such as Taopiaopiao and Maoyan, with scores of 9.4 and 9.5, respectively. This discrepancy has led to accusations of "water army" tactics and malicious scoring, with many fans taking to social media to express their dissatisfaction with the scores. The film's star, Xiao War, has also spoken out about the pressure of competing in the Spring Festival box office, stating that he has done his best and will leave the outcome to the audience and the market. As the Spring Festival box office competition continues, the quality of the films and audience evaluations will remain crucial in determining the success of the movies.
