Chinese Travel Blogger Drowns at Scenic Spot, Sparking Safety Concerns and Debate
The death of travel blogger Jiang Xiaoyin at a scenic spot in Anhui Province's Xuanzhou City has sparked widespread concern and raised questions about the safety and responsibility of tourist attractions in China. On June 17, Jiang's social media account announced his tragic death by drowning while shooting at the Shuimotan Creek Scenic Area. According to reports, Jiang's drone fell into the water, and he attempted to retrieve it, but the scenic area suddenly released water from the reservoir, causing the water level to rise rapidly. Despite being a good swimmer, Jiang was swept away by the strong current and died.

A friend of Jiang's released a video on social media claiming that the scenic area had invited Jiang to shoot the video and that there were serious safety hazards at the site. The friend alleged that there were no warnings or announcements when the water was released, leading to Jiang's tragic death. Additionally, another person who attempted to rescue Jiang was also injured and is currently in the intensive care unit. Jiang's wife claimed that he had been invited to the scenic spot to film a video, and a friend described how Jiang had entered the water to retrieve a drone that had fallen into the water, and as he was trying to retrieve it, the water level suddenly rose from ankle-deep to chest-deep, sweeping him away.
The Shuimotan Creek Scenic Area has responded to the incident, stating that the park was already closed at the time of the incident and was not open to the public. The area's staff claimed that they were not aware of the details surrounding Jiang's death and that relevant authorities were handling the matter. However, the staff's response has raised more questions than answers, and an official investigation is ongoing. The scenic area's management has stated that Jiang Xiaoyin was not invited by the scenic area, but rather came to take pictures on his own initiative, and that the creek has varying depths and that there is a power station upstream, which released water at around 4 pm that day.
The local police station confirmed that the water upstream was released at around 4 pm, and it was also raining at the time, resulting in a stronger water flow when Jiang Xiaoyin entered the water. The police have already notified the deceased's family of the relevant circumstances. The investigation is ongoing, and the scenic area's response and the police's findings will be closely watched as the case unfolds. The incident has sparked a heated debate about the responsibility of tourist attractions to ensure visitor safety and the need for greater transparency and accountability in such cases.
The scenic spot has multiple warning signs indicating the danger of deep water and prohibiting swimming. However, the management stated that the monitoring system primarily focuses on road areas, and the water area is not within their activity range. They also mentioned that the water flow from the upstream reservoir can be strong, especially after heavy rainfall, which may have contributed to the accident. The incident has also highlighted the heroic efforts of a female bystander who attempted to rescue Jiang but was herself swept away and is currently in intensive care.
As the investigation into the incident continues, it remains to be seen how the scenic spot's management and relevant authorities will respond to the tragedy and work to prevent similar incidents in the future. The death of Jiang Xiao Yin has sent shockwaves through the community, raising concerns about safety measures and responsibility at tourist destinations. The scenic spot's management has stated that they did not avoid responsibility and have been in communication with the blogger's family. However, the incident has sparked a heated debate on social media, with many users calling for increased safety measures and greater accountability from tourist attractions.
