Death in Transit: Unlicensed Ambulance's Fatal Delay Sparks Outrage in China
A series of disturbing events has unfolded in China, where a 32-year-old woman, Liu Li, died while being transported in a "black ambulance" to a hospital in Beijing. The ambulance, which was introduced to the family by the hospital, was later found to be unlicensed and lacking in proper medical equipment. Liu Li was initially admitted to the Jilin University First Hospital in Changchun with a complaint of leg pain, but her condition worsened after she was administered cephalosporin antibiotics, to which she was allergic, despite her family's warnings to the medical staff.

When Liu Li's condition worsened, the hospital suggested transferring her to a hospital in Beijing for further treatment. The family agreed, but the ambulance provided by the hospital proved to be a "black ambulance" with no proper medical equipment or qualified medical staff on board. During the journey, the ambulance stopped twice to replenish oxygen supplies, and at one point, the driver stopped to eat at a service station, delaying the journey by half an hour. This critical delay, although seemingly minor, had catastrophic consequences, as Liu Li succumbed to her condition before reaching the hospital in Beijing.
The incident has raised concerns about the lack of regulation and oversight in China's medical transportation industry, as well as the need for greater accountability and transparency in medical practices. The ambulance company involved, Jilin Province Renkang Emergency Rescue Station Co., Ltd., has been found to have a history of operational irregularities and has been subject to court-ordered restrictions on its financial activities. The company had allegedly been charging exorbitant fees for its services without ensuring that the vehicles were adequately equipped or the crew properly trained to handle emergency situations.
The family has since then been seeking justice and compensation for their loss, but the hospital and the ambulance company have been slow to respond, and the family is still owed over 480,000 yuan in compensation. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and sympathy on social media, with many calling for improved patient safety and protection of patients' rights. The public is urged to be vigilant, recognize legitimate ambulance services, and protect their own and others' rights to life and health.
The fact that a patient died in a "black" ambulance, which stopped for a meal and delayed the journey by half an hour, exposes the darkest side of China's medical system. The case underscores the necessity for strict supervision and management of medical institutions and emergency services, ensuring that patients receive timely and proper medical care. The government and relevant authorities must take immediate action to address these systemic flaws and hold accountable those responsible for the tragic death of the young woman.
The family's ordeal also highlights the challenges faced by victims' families in seeking justice and compensation. The court's ruling, which assigned 10% responsibility to the hospital and 60% to the ambulance company, while holding the family liable for 30%, has sparked controversy and raised questions about the fairness of the judgment. As the family continues to seek justice and compensation, it is essential for the authorities to take a closer look at the medical system and emergency services, identifying areas for improvement and implementing reforms to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
