Exposing the Dark Side of Sunscreen Clothing: Fake Products Flood the Market
Exposed by CCTV, some sunscreen clothing products have been found to have a significantly lower protection coefficient than the national standard, sparking heated discussions among consumers. An investigation by CCTV's Finance Channel revealed that some manufacturers are mislabeling their products with exaggerated claims of "core cooling technology" and "new-type tech fabric" to lure consumers into buying their supposedly "high-quality" sunscreen clothing. However, according to the national standard (GB/T 18830—2009), a product can only be considered a "sun protection product" if its UV protection coefficient (UPF) is greater than 40 and its long-wave UVA transmission rate is less than 5%. The investigation found that some manufacturers, such as Xu Zhou Hai Nuo Fashion, are labeling their products with "50+" protection coefficients when in reality they only provide "30+" protection.

Some children's sunscreen clothing products have also been found to be substandard, and manufacturers are using UV-sensitive cards to deceive consumers. One popular sunscreen clothing product with sales of over 30,000 pieces has been found to have a UV protection coefficient far lower than the national standard. This exposé has raised concerns about the authenticity of sunscreen clothing products and the potential harm they may cause to consumers. Moreover, some companies, such as Xin Feng Garment Processing Factory in Jiangxi Province, produce sun protective clothing without labels, including product names, manufacturer names, and addresses, yet their sales are surprisingly high, with one product selling over 300,000 pieces per year.
The lack of regulation in the industry has led to a proliferation of fake and inferior sun protective clothing products on the market. Some testing institutions are also involved in the gray market, providing fake test reports to companies, which can be obtained without actually testing the products. This has created a complete black industry chain, where companies can easily obtain fake certifications and deceive consumers. As a result, many products on the market do not meet the national standards, with some even having no labels or information about the product, manufacturer, or address.
When purchasing sun protection products, consumers must be vigilant and ensure that the products they buy adhere to national standards. The key indicator of a product's authenticity and effectiveness in sun protection is the presence of the GB/T18830 label, which is the nationally recognized standard for sun protective products. Consumers should be cautious of products with exaggerated claims or suspiciously low prices, as these may be indicative of substandard or counterfeit products. By looking out for the GB/T18830 label and being aware of the potential for fake or misleading products, consumers can avoid being misled into buying ineffective products and thus avoid paying what is colloquially referred to as an "intelligence tax."

The recent exposé has sparked a public outcry, with many consumers expressing concerns about the safety and effectiveness of sunscreen clothing products. Some have shared their personal experiences with purchasing substandard products, while others have called for stricter regulation and oversight of the industry. As the summer season approaches, it becomes increasingly crucial for consumers to select genuine sun protective clothing, and for regulatory bodies to take action to prevent the proliferation of fake and inferior products.
