Canadian-Chinese celebrity Kris Wu Appeals Rape Conviction
Following the second hearing of Kris Wu's ongoing rape trial, the former Chinese-Canadian pop idol has once again become a hot topic of discussion on Weibo, China's most influential social media platform. Wu, who was sentenced to 13 years in prison and deported from the country in the first trial, has appealed against the verdict, sparking diverse reactions from Chinese netizens.

Several users expressed surprise and cynicism at Wu's appeal. User @胡萝卜吃兔兔 remarked, "I thought he was already sentenced. So, he appealed. Does he still have fans?" implying the fading public support for the former superstar.
Others were more direct in their disapproval. User @今天吃蛋挞w sarcastically questioned Wu's audacity to appeal, while @小七童鞋777 asserted that Wu should accept his punishment regardless of his objections.
Netizens also expressed frustration over the media's continuous focus on Wu's case, suggesting it overshadowed other critical social issues. User @不是祁正_ commented, "There always seems to be hot news about Kris Wu following major events. The intention is too obvious", implying that the media may be using the scandal to divert public attention from other societal concerns.
In addition, some users felt sympathy for Wu's situation. @坠入小娱路 wrote, "Kris Wu is really pitiful, he's already in prison but still being used as a scapegoat in hot searches every time."
The case has also brought to light other potential financial irregularities associated with Wu's family. @凤凰网娱乐 reported on restrictions on high spending for Wu's cousin, Wu Lin, who reportedly has unfulfilled debts of over CNY 145 million.
Amidst these discussions, the Beijing Third Intermediate People's Court continued to conduct the trial privately to protect the privacy of the victims, as per official announcements from @合肥晚报 and @人民日报. The final verdict of the appeal is yet to be announced.
While opinions on Weibo vary, it's clear that the public scrutiny of Wu's appeal is intense. The case continues to resonate strongly with Chinese netizens, marking a significant moment in the discussion around sexual misconduct in China's entertainment industry.
