The controversy stems from the depiction of the Last Supper during the opening ceremony, which was seen as a mockery of Christianity. Many netizens took to social media to express their outrage, with some calling for a boycott of the Olympics.
One user, @座云公, wrote, "I looked at the explosion points of foreign netizens, including but not limited to: the pluralistic group image layout is similar to the classic painting of Jesus' Last Supper before he was crucified, and the gray horse knight seems to be in line with the image of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, which is tantamount to worshiping the devil and promoting the destruction of the world."
Another user, @林步里, translated CSpire's announcement, stating, "We were shocked by the mockery of the Last Supper during the opening ceremonies of the Paris Olympics. CSpire will be pulling our advertising from the Olympics."
The backlash has been significant, with many calling for the Olympic Games to take responsibility for the controversy. @Nathan Cervera, a Twitter user, wrote, "CRAZY: Olympic Games DELETED Opening Ceremony Video! After causing MASSIVE controversy for mocking Christians, the Olympics decided to delete EVERY clip including their own on YouTube."
Experts have weighed in on the controversy, with some calling for a higher level of cognitive awareness among the Chinese public. 管清友, a renowned expert, stated, "Many Chinese audiences found the Paris Olympics opening ceremony difficult to accept, and we may need to gradually adapt and raise our cognitive awareness."
However, others have criticized the reaction, saying that it is an overreaction and that the Chinese public should not be influenced by Western values. One user wrote, "Certain people are too eager to shout about 'understanding human progress and becoming a part of world civilization,' but now it seems that even the Olympic officials lack this confidence, which is why they had to delete the video in a hurry!"
The controversy has highlighted the challenges of cultural differences and the need for greater understanding and tolerance. As the Olympic Games continue, it remains to be seen how the organizers will address the backlash and ensure that the event remains a celebration of athletic achievement and international unity.
