Paris 2024 Olympics Organizers Apologize for 'Insensitive' Opening Ceremony Sketch

The Paris 2024 Olympics organizing committee has apologized for any offense caused by a sketch performed during the opening ceremony, which some viewers deemed insensitive and sacrilegious. The sketch, inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's famous painting "The Last Supper," featured a group of performers, including some from the LGBTQ+ community, reenacting the iconic scene with a modern twist.

The apology came after a flurry of criticism on social media, with many Weibo users expressing their outrage and disappointment over the perceived disrespect towards Christian values and traditions. One user, who wrote under the hashtag #巴黎奥组委为开幕式道歉# (Paris Organizing Committee apologizes for the opening ceremony), stated: "Some people like to say 'we can't compromise the interests of the majority for the sake of the minority.' Similarly, 'we can't compromise the interests of the minority for the sake of the majority' either." The user implied that the sketch was an example of the latter, where the organizers prioritized catering to the interests of the minority over the majority.

Another user, @无心简影 (Heartless Movie), posted a video commentary on the incident, questioning whether the sketch was suitable for minors. Their video sparked a heated debate in the comments section, with some users defending the organizers' creative choices and others echoing their concerns.

While some users applauded the organizers' apology, others felt that it was unnecessary. @攀谈攀谈 (Chatting) argued that the apology was a sign of weakness and that the organizers should have stood by their artistic vision. They wrote: "This is France, after all. They're the ones who specialize in 'relaxation' and 'artistic expression.'"

On the other hand, @暴食症患者李舜生 (Bulimic Li Shunsheng) sarcastically asked what would happen to those who had been defending the organizers' decision to include the sketch in the first place. They posted a screenshot of a Reuters article about the apology, commenting: "What about those who were saying that the sketch was 'opening' and 'inclusive'? What's going to happen to them now?"

The apology was also met with approval from some users, who saw it as a sign of respect and consideration for the audience's feelings. One user commented on the Reuters post: "This is what I call 'openness' and 'consideration.'"

As the controversy surrounding the opening ceremony continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the organizers will respond to the backlash and whether their apology will be enough to quell the outrage. One thing is certain, however – the incident has sparked a lively debate about artistic freedom, cultural sensitivity, and the role of the Olympics as a platform for creativity and expression.
