Qinling Mountains Fail to Block Devastating Sandstorm in Sichuan Province
A severe sandstorm has struck Sichuan Province, with the Qinling Mountains, typically a natural barrier, failing to block the dust. The storm, which originated from Mongolia, has affected multiple cities in Sichuan, including Guangyuan, Mianyang, Deyang, and Chengdu. The sandstorm has brought low visibility, with residents experiencing respiratory issues and skin irritation. Guangyuan city has been particularly hard hit, with the sandstorm reducing visibility and leaving a layer of dust on vehicles and buildings.

According to experts, the sandstorm is a result of strong winds in the northwest region, which have picked up large amounts of dust and sand from the Mongolian desert. The Qinling Mountains, which typically act as a barrier, have been unable to block the dust due to the strength of the winds. As a result, the sandstorm has raised concerns about air quality, with the PM10 index exceeding safe limits in many areas. Residents are advised to take precautions, including wearing masks, avoiding outdoor activities, and keeping windows and doors closed.
The Sichuan Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment announced that due to the influence of the western cold air mass, Sichuan is expected to experience a sandstorm from March 26 to 29. The sandstorm has had a significant impact on the region, with PM10 concentrations in Guangyuan City rising from 98 micrograms per cubic meter at 12 pm to 602 micrograms per cubic meter at 2 pm, exceeding the safe limit. The Air Quality Index (AQI) has also reached hazardous levels. The provincial government has issued a yellow alert for geological disasters, warning of potential landslides and mudslides in the affected areas.
The Sichuan Provincial Meteorological Observatory has also issued a blue alert for heavy rain, predicting that the rain will bring relief to the region and help to clear the air. However, the rain may also lead to geological disasters, and residents are advised to be cautious and take necessary precautions. Experts recommend that citizens take proactive protective measures against the impending sandstorm, including closing all doors and windows to prevent sand particles from entering homes and workplaces, and securely fastening any temporary structures or outdoor items that could become projectiles in strong winds.
By taking these precautions, individuals can significantly reduce their risk of injury and discomfort during the sandstorm. Furthermore, staying informed through local weather reports and following the guidance provided by authorities will be crucial in navigating this period safely. The government and emergency services are working to mitigate the effects of the storm, but it is essential for individuals to take responsibility for their own safety and well-being. The sandstorm has raised concerns about the long-term impact on the environment and public health, with experts warning that it could lead to an increase in respiratory problems, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and young children.

The sandstorm is expected to continue until March 29, with the Sichuan Provincial Environmental Monitoring Station predicting that from March 28 to 29, the northern part of the Sichuan Basin will experience scattered precipitation, and the sand and dust are expected to settle gradually. Residents are advised to stay indoors, avoid outdoor activities, and wear protective masks to minimize the risks associated with the sandstorm. The sandstorm has also affected other parts of China, with Beijing experiencing a rare spring snowfall, and a 2.5-magnitude earthquake striking Tangshan, Hebei Province. However, the main concern remains the sandstorm in Sichuan, where residents are bracing for another day of hazardous air quality and reduced visibility.
