Russian Presidential Elections: Putin's Re-Election Seen as Inevitable

As of March 15th, the official voting for the Russian presidential elections began at 8 am local time. The elections are taking place across the vast country, which spans 11 time zones. Voting started in the Far East regions of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug and the Republic of Karelia. The election process will span over three days, concluding on March 17th. A total of four candidates, including the current president, Vladimir Putin, are participating in the election. This year's elections have been particularly intriguing for several reasons. Putin, who has been the President of Russia since 2012, is widely expected to secure another term. His support is reportedly over 80%, which is higher than the previous elections. According to Reuters, the last public opinion polls before the election showed Putin's approval rating surged to 81%, the highest in a decade. Putin's popularity and the perceived inevitability of his victory have been echoed on popular social media platform, Weibo. Many users have stated their belief that Putin's re-election is a foregone conclusion and have expressed their support for him through memes and posts, such as "普京90%以上的概率当选下届总统" (English translation: I think Putin has a 90% chance or more of being elected the next president). The overwhelming support for Putin is not surprising considering the current state of affairs in Russia.

Russia is currently embroiled in the Ukraine conflict, which has escalated tensions with Western nations. Many users on Weibo argue that Putin's strong stance against the West and his perceived ability to handle the crisis make him irreplaceable. (English translation: The situation Russia is facing now is very serious with the Russo-Ukrainian conflict continuing, Western European and American countries are watching Russia vigilantly, even not ruling out the possibility of direct intervention. In this situation, except Putin, no one else has the ability to solve these problems.
Therefore, the majority of Russians will likely still place their hope on Putin.) Interestingly, this belief isn't solely confined to Russian citizens. A video posted by a Chinese exporter on Weibo, who has business interests in Russia, also expressed his confidence in Putin, saying, "我觉得普京最终能获胜。不知我猜中的概率有多大?" (English translation: I think Putin will eventually win.
I wonder what my chances of guessing right are?) Another video posted was a street interview where Russians were asked which country they would choose as their ally, China or the United States. The interviewee, after a moment of contemplation, chose China. This reflects the growing strategic partnership between Russia and China, which has strengthened in the face of Western sanctions. This partnership, among other reasons, may be one of the driving factors behind Putin's popularity.
Despite sanctions and criticism from Western countries, Putin's administration has managed to steer the country through tough economic times, maintaining stability and growth. Putin's re-election also changes the political landscape of Eastern Europe and influences Russia's relations with other countries. Putin has been a vocal critic of NATO, accusing the alliance of aggression towards Russia. With Putin expected to serve another term, it can be anticipated that Russia will continue to pursue an independent foreign policy, which may bring further tensions with the West.
However, some users on Weibo also view this as a positive development. One user posted a satirical video made by a Ukrainian account that shows a hypothetical situation where Russia retaliates with nuclear weapons, leading to the United States obliterating Belarus. The video takes a light-hearted tone and perhaps reflects a sentiment of Russians seeing the situation as a David versus Goliath scenario, generating sympathy. Regardless of the outcome, the Russian presidential elections have undoubtedly captured global attention. Whether Putin wins with a landslide or not, his re-election will have far-reaching consequences not just for Russia but also for the rest of the world. This is especially true given Russia's role on the world stage as a major nuclear power and a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. The future of Russian politics remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the country's citizens, and many people around the world, are looking to Putin for leadership. As the voting concludes, the world waits with bated breath to see who will win the presidency. But many, especially in Russia, are confident that Putin's victory will be announced on March 18th, the official announcement date. Thus, while the world watches, it seems that for many in Russia, Putin's fourth term is already a fait accompli.
