SHANGHAI - Following recent reports of Tesla Shanghai's significant increase in quarterly performance bonuses, the online community on China's biggest social media platform, Weibo, has been buzzing with varied reactions.

According to several Tesla Shanghai factory employees, their recent second quarter bonuses saw a substantial bump. Employees claim their received bonuses equated to 1.5 times their monthly basic salary, a remarkable increase from the typical quarterly bonuses which were tied to average performance.

However, it's not all applause for the electric vehicle giant. Amid the cheers, a wave of criticism is rapidly gaining momentum on Weibo. Netizens are accusing Tesla of maliciously increasing wages, arguing that such practices do not encourage the spirit of hard work among China's younger generations.

One user, under the alias "1492二秃子baby," expressed concerns about Tesla's wage hike, stating, "Oppose Tesla's malicious wage increase, it is not beneficial for our country's young people to strive."

The user's sentiment resonates with a significant portion of Weibo's community, raising concerns about the potential disruptions in the market wage order. "Strongly condemn Tesla for maliciously raising wages, firmly oppose Tesla's disruption of the market salary order," wrote another user, who believes this goes against China's tradition of endurance and hard work.

The backdrop to this controversy is a recent court document that disclosed Tesla's Board will return $735 million to the company to settle serious high pay issues accused by shareholders. This settlement is one of the largest in its kind.

Inflammatory remarks also surfaced amidst the online chatter, accusing Tesla of manipulating worker contradictions. One user condemned the company, saying, "Capitalist, stoking the conflict among workers, the intent to harm us is not dead."

Others, however, appeared to take a more opportunistic view, seizing the chance to express interest in joining the company. "Is Tesla Shanghai still hiring? We could form a group," one netizen proposed humorously.

As the discussions heat up, it's clear that this move by Tesla has not just sparked a debate about wage structures but has touched a deeper nerve around issues of capitalism, societal values, and the role of multinational corporations in China.
