Tibet Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 16 as Rescuers Work Through the Night

The death toll from the magnitude-7.0 earthquake that struck Baqing County in Tibet's Nagqu prefecture has risen to 16, with 46 injured, as armed police and relief convoys push into remote herding communities on the plateau.

The confirmed toll from the magnitude-7.0 earthquake in Tibet's Nagqu prefecture rose to 16 dead and 46 injured by Friday morning. Citing the Nagqu earthquake relief headquarters, Beijing Daily reported that as of 5:20 a.m. on October 23, 11 of the injured were in serious condition and 35 lightly hurt, 339 households had lost or seen damage to their homes, and 20 livestock sheds had been wrecked.

The quake struck on October 22 near Baqing County, a herding county in northern Tibet whose epicenter lies roughly 57 kilometers from the nearest county seat. Trending on Weibo covered the strike as it happened, when it stood as China's strongest earthquake of the year; what has changed since is the human accounting.

The official numbers moved twice overnight. Xinhua's bulletin put the toll at 16 dead and 32 injured as of 2:25 a.m.; by 5:20 a.m. the injury count had grown to 46, as crews pushed further into the county. Footage posted by China News Service showed armed police units driving through the night toward the disaster zone, and relief supplies have begun arriving.

The damage reports read like a portrait of the local economy: houses and livestock sheds, no factories or high-rises. Baqing sits on the high Tibetan Plateau, where herding families live scattered across a vast county, and with the plateau's winter close at hand, wrecked sheds are not a secondary loss — the animals are the household's livelihood.

Reaching the scattered settlements is the work now under way, and it is why the numbers keep changing. Both the injury count and the damage tally have been revised upward as teams contact communities that were cut off in the first hours after the quake. The final accounting for Baqing is still being written.
