Trump's Tariff Temptation: Experts Warn of Escalating Trade War with China

The future direction of the tariffs war between the US and China hangs in the balance, as experts predict a potential escalation by former President Trump. According to Professor Wang Xiaosong, Trump's tariff strategy is akin to "lowering taxes as bait, and escalating as the sword," aiming to force China to accept the United States' stringent conditions. This approach is meant to pressure China into accepting unfavorable terms, possibly in a future trade agreement. Meanwhile, U.S. allies are also opposing Trump's tariff policies, with the European Union retaliating with a 700 million euro fine imposed on Apple and Meta, stating "digital tax countermeasures are being implemented."

China has already taken steps to mitigate the effects of the tariffs war by diversifying its imports, reducing its reliance on US goods. The proportion of US goods in China's total imports has decreased from 8.4% in 2017 to 6.4% last year. This reduction in dependence on US goods gives China more leverage in negotiations, potentially forcing the US to make greater concessions. The situation is further complicated by China's countermeasures, including the control of rare earth exports, which has sent shockwaves through US military-industrial enterprises. A significant increase in tariffs has already led to a substantial decrease in Boeing aircraft orders, showcasing the tangible impacts of the trade dispute.

The economic implications of Trump's potential escalation of the trade war are far-reaching and alarming. The US tariff policy has already led to a 0.5 percentage point drop in global economic growth expectations, with the US itself experiencing a significant slowdown in GDP growth, which has been halved to 1.8%. The Dow Jones index has lost a staggering $6.6 trillion over the past three months, with Tesla's stock price plummeting drastically, prompting Elon Musk to express his frustration at a White House meeting, warning that Silicon Valley may be forced to relocate to Singapore if the situation continues. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has downgraded its forecast for 2025 economic growth from 3.3% to 2.8%, sparking widespread concerns about a global economic downturn.

The situation has become increasingly dire, with 12 US states, including Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, and New York, filing a lawsuit against the Trump administration, challenging its authority to impose tariffs without congressional approval. The lawsuit argues that Trump has "upended the constitutional order and brought chaos to the US economy." As the trade war continues to escalate, the economic consequences are becoming increasingly clear. The US stock market has experienced significant volatility, with the S&P 500 index rising 1.67% on Wednesday, while the Nasdaq Composite index surged 2.50%, driven by hopes of a potential easing of tensions between the US and China. However, with Trump's latest remarks, it remains to be seen whether a resolution can be reached, and the global economy can avoid a further downturn. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether Trump will maintain a hardline stance or be swayed by the pressures of a plummeting stock market, fleeing investors, and unrest among voters. This complex interplay of economic and political factors will undoubtedly shape the trajectory of the tariffs war and its far-reaching consequences for both nations and the global economy.
