Welcoming the God of Wealth: A Timeless Chinese Tradition

As the fifth day of the Lunar New Year dawns, a centuries-old tradition comes alive in China - the welcoming of the God of Wealth. This auspicious day, known as "Welcoming the God of Wealth on the Fifth Day of the Lunar New Year," is marked by a myriad of rituals and activities aimed at ushering in prosperity and banishing poverty. From the crack of dawn, families across the country engage in a fervent display of fireworks, meticulous cleaning of their homes, and the symbolic act of "throwing away poverty" to make way for the benevolent God of Wealth.

According to Professor Cai Lei, a deputy professor at Wuhan University's Sociology Department, the origins of this tradition are multifaceted. One legend suggests that on this day, the God of Wealth, Zhao Gongming, leads five routes of wealth gods to inspect the mortal world, rewarding the virtuous and punishes the wicked, while bestowing wealth upon all. Another theory points to the birthdate of Cai Jing, a historical figure once revered as the God of Wealth, which falls on the fifth day of the Lunar New Year. Additionally, the tradition is linked to the custom of "breaking five" or "sending away poverty," where the fifth day marks the end of various taboos and restrictions that started from the previous lunar month, ushering in a new cycle of prosperity. This day is also known as "破五" (po wa), or "breaking five," where people bid farewell to the "five poor" - poverty of wisdom, knowledge, literature, fate, and relationships.

The tradition of welcoming the God of Wealth on the fifth day of the Lunar New Year has its roots in various folklore and mythological tales. The God of Wealth is believed to bring prosperity and good fortune to those who worship him. People believe that by welcoming the God of Wealth, they can attract good fortune and wealth into their lives. The concept of acquiring wealth through proper means, obtaining wealth with virtue, being rich with etiquette, and aiding those in distress reflects the influence of Confucian, Buddhist, and Taoist ideologies on the nation's perspective on wealth, emphasizing self-cultivation and reverence for nature. This nuanced understanding underscores the notion that true wealth is not merely material, but also rooted in moral character and the well-being of society.

As families welcome the God of Wealth, they embody the hope for a year filled with financial success and the well-being that comes with it. The ritual of welcoming the God of Wealth on the fifth day of the Lunar New Year is a vibrant expression of these aspirations, blending tradition, folklore, and the universal quest for prosperity. On this day, people engage in various activities, including eating traditional foods such as "招财进宝汤圆" (a type of dumpling) and "思念小柿也如意汤圆" (a type of sweet dumpling), which are believed to bring good fortune and wealth. Many also participate in the popular "Collecting Five Blessings" activity on mobile payment platforms, where people can collect virtual blessings and redeem them for rewards. In some regions, people eat dumplings, known as "饺子," to mark the occasion.

The tradition has also been promoted through various media channels, including social media and online videos. Celebrities such as 周深 (Zhou Shen) and 李若彤 (Carina Lau) have participated in the promotion of the tradition, sharing their own experiences and wishes for the new year. Some have even taken to social media to share their own unique ways of welcoming the God of Wealth, such as eating hot pot with special ingredients like "排骨豆豉" and "豆米," or using snakes as a symbol of good fortune. For instance, a video of 杨丽萍 (Yang Liping) performing a snake dance has gone viral, and many are using the hashtag #正月初五接财神 (Welcoming the God of Wealth on the fifth day of the Lunar New Year) to share their own experiences and wishes.

In recent years, the tradition has evolved to incorporate new elements, such as the use of technology to collect virtual blessings and the incorporation of modern foods and activities into the celebrations. However, the core of the tradition remains the same - a celebration of the God of Wealth and the hope for a prosperous year. As the tradition continues to evolve and adapt to modern times, it remains an essential part of Chinese heritage and a testament to the country's rich cultural history. The celebration of the God of Wealth on the fifth day of the Lunar New Year highlights the profound desire for a prosperous life, deeply rooted in Chinese culture, where wealth is considered one of the five blessings in traditional Chinese philosophy.
