Xi'an Residents Rattled by Tremors: Social Media Abuzz with Earthquake Concerns
A recent series of tremors and earthquakes in Xi'an, China, has captured the attention of the public and sparked widespread discussion on social media. The initial incident occurred on March 28, 2024, when a 7.9 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar generated tremors felt approximately 1500 km away in Xi'an. Although the Xi'an Earthquake Bureau stated that no seismic data was recorded, suggesting the tremors may be due to other reasons, residents took to social media to share their experiences and concerns.

On Weibo, hashtags related to the Xi'an earthquake trended, with users expressing anxiety and checking in on one another's well-being. Some reported feeling strong tremors, particularly in high-rise buildings, while others claimed to have felt nothing. Comments ranged from fearful expressions and wishes for safety to downplaying the severity of a 2.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred later in Xi'an's Baqiao District.
Historically, Xi'an has experienced significant seismic activity, with 128 earthquakes of magnitude 4 or higher since the 2nd century BC. Notably, a M7 earthquake struck Lantian in 35 BC. The Guanzhong Basin, where Xi'an is located, is expected to experience major earthquakes in the future, with the seismic design intensity for most general construction projects in Xi'an set at VIII degrees.
In response to earthquake concerns, various institutions and government agencies have established frameworks for monitoring, prevention, and response. The Xi'an Earthquake Administration, affiliated with the government, oversees earthquake disaster prevention and mitigation efforts. The Shaanxi Provincial Earthquake Administration, a higher-level entity, manages earthquake-related affairs across the province, including Xi'an.
Key figures within these administrations, such as Liu Chen and Wang Enhu, play crucial roles in supervising and managing earthquake-related work. Emergency Management Bureaus at municipal and district/county levels are also responsible for emergency response and disaster reduction, including earthquake-related incidents.
A recent 2.1 magnitude earthquake in Baqiao District, while considered minor, garnered attention on Weibo, with users inquiring about the impact and expressing wishes for safety. Ongoing prevention and preparedness efforts include earthquake disaster prevention and reduction study activities, public speaking competitions, and the establishment of emergency shelters.
In 2022-2023, Samsung (China) Semiconductor Co., Ltd. collaborated with the Shaanxi Provincial Earthquake Bureau to construct a seismic early warning system. Xi'an has established a mechanism for issuing short-term earthquake forecasts in emergency situations with clear pre-seismic anomalies. The city has also built five new Class I emergency shelters in 2017.
The public's response to the Xi'an earthquake highlights a mix of genuine concern for safety and a pragmatic understanding of smaller tremors. Social media has served as a vital tool for immediate information sharing and emotional support among residents, demonstrating its significance in times of uncertainty.
