Student Sued School for 1 Million Yuan After Corporal Punishment Led to Anxiety Disorder
In a disturbing case of corporal punishment, a 7-year-old student in Yunnan Province, China, was diagnosed with anxiety disorder after being physically punished by his teacher for not paying attention in class. The student, who was born in August 2016, was subjected to hair-pulling and ear-pinching by his teacher, resulting in significant hair loss. Following a hospital diagnosis of anxiety disorder, the student's parents sued the teacher and the school, seeking compensation of over 1 million yuan (approximately $140,000 USD). On June 16, the Yunnan Stone Forest County People's Court ruled in the first instance that the school, as the employer, was liable for the damages and ordered it to pay the student 78,000 yuan (approximately $11,000 USD) in compensation.
