8 Dos and Don'ts to Boost Health During the Scorching San Fu Period
As the scorching summer heat sets in, traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes the importance of taking care of one's health during the "San Fu" period, considered the hottest time of the year. This period is not only the most challenging to endure but also an excellent opportunity for nourishing and rejuvenating the body. The San Fu period is divided into three stages: the initial, middle, and final stages, each lasting 10 days. During this time, the body's yang energy reaches its peak, and the natural world is filled with vibrant energy. However, many people are unaware that the primary concern during this period should not be the heat, but rather the invasion of "cold evil" into the body.

Medical experts warn that the humid and sweltering weather makes it easy for the body to be invaded by cold evil, which can lead to various health problems. They advise against overindulging in cold foods and beverages, such as cold drinks and ice cream, as well as excessive use of air conditioning. These habits can cause the body to become vulnerable to cold evil and lead to issues like poor digestion, nausea, and even heart problems.
To stay healthy during the San Fu period, experts recommend the following "8 dos and 8 don'ts". The eight recommended practices include maintaining a suitable room temperature of 26°C, engaging in regular walking to promote sweating, drinking hot tea to replenish potassium, consuming a bowl of three-bean soup to enhance spleen function, taking a short nap to recharge, drinking small amounts of warm water frequently, eating foods rich in potassium, such as onions and garlic, and soaking your feet in warm water before bed to promote relaxation.
Conversely, the eight cautionary habits to avoid include staying in air-conditioned rooms for extended periods, directly blowing air conditioners towards your neck, drinking cold water or eating cold foods hastily, overindulging in cold foods and beverages, taking cold showers, walking barefoot on cold floors, wearing revealing clothing, and getting overly emotional, as excessive emotional stress can harm overall health.
This year's Sanfu period spans 30 days, divided into three phases: the initial phase from July 20th to July 29th, the middle phase from July 30th to August 8th, and the final phase from August 9th to August 18th. Being aware of the Sanfu timeline empowers individuals to prepare and adapt their wellbeing routines accordingly, ensuring optimal health during this period.
Traditional Chinese medicine places great emphasis on living in harmony with nature and adopting a balanced lifestyle during the San Fu period. This principle of "acting in accordance with the seasons" reminds us to be diligent in our self-care routines while avoiding behaviors that might disrupt our bodily harmony. During this time, it is believed that our bodies are more receptive to nourishment and detoxification, making it an ideal period for rejuvenation.
In line with traditional Chinese medicine principles, several dietary recommendations are suggested for the San Fu season. These include consuming "three types of gourds" (bitter melon, winter melon, and luffa), "three types of beans" (mung beans, adzuki beans, and black beans), and other beneficial foods like ginger, which is known for its warming properties and digestive benefits. Additionally, meats such as duck, chicken, pork trotters, and lamb are recommended, along with lotus seeds and fish, which are believed to promote nutritional balance and vitality.
On the other hand, certain foods and beverages are advised against during this period. It is recommended to avoid eating ice-cold watermelon, excessive sweets, and spicy or overly heated peppers, as these can either shock the digestive system or exacerbate internal heat. Furthermore, raw or cold seafood, frozen drinks, and oily fried nuts should be avoided, as they can introduce harmful chilled energy or increase the body's burden.
By following these guidelines and dietary recommendations, individuals can optimize their health and well-being during the San Fu period. As the body naturally seeks to expel cold energy and replenish its vitality, adhering to these traditional Chinese medicine recommendations can help foster a smoother transition into the changing seasons and promote overall wellness.
