Contaminated Drink Sparks Health Scare: University Students Contract Urinary Tract Infections After Consuming Tainted Beverage
A recent incident in Zhejiang province, China, has sparked concern over the safety of beverages after a university student discovered a green, leaf-like substance in their drink, which led to a urinary tract infection. The student, nicknamed "Xiao Xu," purchased the drink on July 2nd and consumed it over the course of three days, from July 3rd to July 6th, after storing it in the refrigerator. Despite the drink's acidic and sweet flavor, which masked any noticeable spoilage, Xiao Xu's friend, "Xiao Zhou," experienced severe diarrhea.

On July 6th, a hospital check-up revealed that both students had contracted urinary tract infections, with the doctor noting that the cause of the infection could be multifaceted and not solely attributed to the consumption of the contaminated drink. The incident has raised questions about the storage and handling of beverages after they have been opened, with the manufacturer's instructions, which simply state "please consume promptly after opening," being called into question. The beverage in question was produced on December 13, 2024, with a shelf life of nine months. After opening it on July 3, they stored it in the refrigerator and consumed it intermittently until the afternoon of July 6, when they noticed a suspicious, mold-like substance floating in the liquid.
They immediately scooped it out and took photos, which they uploaded to social media seeking help. Later that evening, medical tests at the Zhejiang University School of Medicine's First Affiliated Hospital, Qiantang Campus, revealed that both students had contracted urinary tract infections caused by bacterial contamination. According to Dr. Jiang Feng, Deputy Director of the Urology Department at the Second People's Hospital of Hunan Province, urinary tract infections (UTIs) occur when pathogens enter the urinary system, causing an inflammatory response. A weakened immune system, which impairs the body's ability to fight off infections, is one of the factors that can trigger UTIs.
Some netizens have expressed skepticism about the causal link between the university student's consumption of the contaminated drink and the subsequent UTI diagnosis, arguing that UTIs are often the result of ascending infections, where bacteria from the gastrointestinal tract or other parts of the body migrate to the urinary system, rather than being directly caused by ingesting contaminated substances. Dr. Jiang's comments suggest that a decline in immune function may have played a role in the student's infection, but the exact relationship between the contaminated drink and the UTI remains unclear. Further investigation is needed to determine whether the student's infection was directly caused by the tainted beverage or if other factors were at play.
In light of this incident, experts remind us that opened beverages should be consumed within 24 hours, and if not, they should be refrigerated immediately and not left out for more than 48 hours. Additionally, unfinished drinks should be sealed tightly with a clip or transferred to a sealed container to minimize exposure to air. At the same time, people should be mindful of food safety and avoid consuming spoiled or expired beverages to prevent bacterial infections. By taking these simple precautions, we can significantly reduce the risk of falling ill from contaminated drinks. It is essential to prioritize food safety and take responsibility for our own health, rather than solely relying on food producers to ensure the safety of their products. As the students await a meeting with the manufacturer to discuss compensation, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of proper food and beverage safety, and the need for clear guidelines on storage and handling to prevent similar incidents in the future.
