Super Typhoon Doksuri: Potentially One of the Most Devastating Typhoons of the New Century
The anticipation of Super Typhoon Doksuri, which has been predicted to cause wide-ranging, severe impacts in several provinces of southern China, has triggered heightened alarm and intense discussions on Chinese social media platforms, especially on Weibo.

The storm, which is expected to make landfall near Xiamen, Fujian province, on the morning of July 28, could potentially be one of the most destructive typhoons of the new century for the region. It has already intensified from a strong typhoon to a super typhoon level, sparking fears about its potential damage.
As per the posts on Weibo, Xiamen upgraded its emergency response to the typhoon to level two on July 26, at 9:20 AM. The city has reportedly become overcast, with strong winds already making their presence felt. The maximum effect of the typhoon is projected to hit between the morning of July 28, affecting areas from Jinjiang, Fujian to the coastal regions bordering Guangdong.
The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) has raised the typhoon warning to red – the highest level. The posts indicate that for the first time, the predicted landing intensity of the typhoon has been upgraded from "typhoon or strong typhoon level" to "strong typhoon or super typhoon level."
From the current predictions, Typhoon Doksuri is set to be the most impactful typhoon of the year so far, affecting a wide range of areas with the greatest intensity and duration. Apart from Fujian and Guangdong, regions such as Taiwan, Zhejiang, Hunan, Jiangxi, Hubei, and Anhui are also expected to feel the effects of the storm.
Weibo users have expressed their concerns and shared advice on how to stay safe during the typhoon. One user advised: "During the typhoon, do not panic in case of an emergency. Choose a safe area to ensure your safety and call for help in time. 119 is always by your side. Good night." Firefighters in Liuzhou also joined the discussion, pledging their commitment to public safety.
Many Weibo users expressed their worries for the most vulnerable people, especially elderly individuals living in rural areas, farmers whose crops may be damaged, and stray animals. Moreover, many users also expressed a sense of dread about the approaching storm, with one remarking, "OMG, is it really that scary?" and another noting, "the atmosphere has been created at this point. Not to blow [the matter out of proportion], but we people in Guangdong don't want to blow our air conditioners outside, it's really hot."
In the face of the impending disaster, there's a shared sense of unity and resilience on Weibo. As one user expressed, "Everyone along the coast must be prepared and pay attention to safety." Another urged the typhoon to change its course, "Pray for the typhoon to turn around, don't come to our country."
The super typhoon comes on the back of significant southward deviation due to the interactive effect of the low-pressure area on the east coast of Luzon Island. However, the typhoon has turned northward again, leading to significant ground friction weakening its core region, but its outer eyewall has gradually become prominent.
As the storm draws closer, residents are urged to be vigilant and make necessary preparations. With the power and potential impact of Doksuri, it is clear that this event could be a major test of the region's disaster response capabilities and resilience. The online community will likely continue to play a significant role in providing real-time updates, sharing advice, and offering support as the situation evolves.
