The use of air conditioners has become a necessity in summer, but many people have misconceptions about their usage, particularly when it comes to the question of whether it is more energy-efficient to turn the air conditioner on and off frequently or to leave it on continuously. According to Li Jinbao, director of the China Refrigeration Society's Science Popularization Department, frequently turning the air conditioner on and off can actually consume more energy. The startup phase of an air conditioner requires a lot of energy, and frequent restarts can lead to higher overall energy consumption. Moreover, the longer the air conditioner operates, the more pronounced this difference becomes. Additionally, frequent on-and-off switching can put excessive pressure on the compressor, leading to a shorter lifespan.

To use an air conditioner more efficiently, it is recommended to minimize heat exchange between indoors and outdoors, turn off the air conditioner completely when not in use, make use of sleep mode, and consider using an inverter air conditioner. Furthermore, some people believe that using the dehumidification mode on an air conditioner can also cool the air and is more energy-efficient. However, this is not entirely accurate. In southern regions where the summer is both hot and humid, using the dehumidification mode can help maintain a comfortable indoor humidity level between 45% and 65%, which is beneficial for human health. If the initial indoor temperature is high, it is advisable to start with the cooling mode and then switch to dehumidification mode once the room has cooled down. This approach can achieve both dehumidification and cooling effects while saving energy.
In contrast, in northern regions where the summer is hot but not humid, it is more appropriate to use the cooling mode. Especially on extremely hot days with temperatures nearing 40°C, using the dehumidification mode not only fails to save energy but may even increase energy consumption, and the slow cooling process can compromise comfort. For those who prefer to keep their air conditioner running continuously, there are several techniques to minimize energy consumption. Utilizing inverter air conditioners, which can adjust their compressor speed to match the cooling demand, is an effective way to reduce energy waste. Additionally, setting the temperature at a reasonable level, such as between 25-27°C (77-81°F), can also help decrease energy consumption.
Another approach is to use shading devices, such as curtains or blinds, to block direct sunlight from entering the room, thereby reducing the amount of heat that the air conditioner needs to counteract. Furthermore, slightly increasing the set temperature, such as from 25°C to 26°C (77°F to 79°F), and simultaneously using a ceiling fan or floor fan to circulate the air can make the room feel cooler while using less energy. To healthily use an air conditioner, several tips are worth noting, including regularly cleaning the air conditioner, avoiding sudden temperature changes, maintaining indoor humidity, setting a reasonable temperature, ventilating regularly, avoiding direct airflow, and adjusting air direction for efficiency.
When stepping out for a short period, there's no need to turn off the air conditioner, as the energy consumed to cool the room back down after returning can be more than the energy used to maintain a consistent temperature. Another effective method is using sunshades or curtains to block direct sunlight, which can significantly heat up a room and cause the air conditioner to work harder, thus consuming more electricity. Adjusting the thermostat settings wisely can make a big difference. Raising the temperature by just a degree or two when the room is not occupied can lead to substantial energy savings without compromising comfort. It's also crucial to ensure that the air conditioner is properly maintained, including regular cleaning of filters, to optimize its performance and efficiency.
Additionally, utilizing natural ventilation when possible can reduce the reliance on air conditioning. Opening windows during cooler parts of the day to let in fresh air and then closing them to retain the coolness can be an effective strategy, especially in climates with significant temperature fluctuations between day and night. By adopting these strategies, individuals can significantly reduce their energy consumption while maintaining a comfortable indoor environment. This not only contributes to lowering electricity bills but also plays a role in reducing the overall demand on power grids, which can help mitigate the impact of peak summer usage on the environment. By understanding the most efficient ways to use air conditioners and following these guidelines, individuals can not only save energy but also maintain a healthier and more comfortable indoor environment during the hot summer months.
