Fury Erupts as Paris Hotel Refuses to Fly Chinese Flag During Olympics

A recent controversy has erupted in China after a Chinese blogger, known as Zhang Jiao, exposed the Paris Evergreen Laurel Hotel's refusal to fly the Chinese national flag during the Olympic Games. Zhang, who was staying at the hotel, had requested that the hotel display the Chinese flag, but was rebuffed twice by hotel management.

In an exclusive interview with Phoenix Television, Zhang expressed his disappointment and frustration with the hotel's response. He stated that the hotel's refusal to fly the Chinese flag not only disregarded the feelings of Chinese guests but also lacked respect for China on the international stage. As a result, Zhang decided to document the incident and share it on his social media platforms, hoping to bring more attention to the issue.

However, he did not anticipate the widespread discussion and strong reactions that followed. Zhang admitted that the intense online attention had a significant impact on his personal life.

The incident has sparked outrage among Chinese netizens, with many taking to Weibo to express their dissatisfaction. One user commented, "Why can't they hang the Chinese flag? Are they trying to provoke us?" Another user praised Zhang, saying, "The person who exposed the incident did a great job!"

The hotel's handling of the situation has been widely criticized, with many considering their apology to be insincere. In a statement released on August 15, the Evergreen Laurel Hotel acknowledged that their handling of the incident was insufficient, but many felt that the apology did not adequately address the concerns of the public.

The incident has also led to a backlash against the hotel, with over 50 French-Chinese business associations condemning the hotel's actions and announcing that they would be severing all ties with the establishment. Multiple online platforms, including Ctrip and Meituan, have removed the hotel from their listings.

A Weibo user sarcastically commented, "Maybe the hotel just doesn't want to earn money from mainland China. Well, let's satisfy them then. There are plenty of other hotels to choose from."

The controversy has also led to speculation about the hotel's motives. One user wondered, "Is the hotel trying to provoke China? Or are they just trying to appease other customers?"

In a video posted on Weibo, Phoenix Television showed footage of their attempts to interview hotel management, only to be rebuffed. The hotel had also removed the "China" option from their website, leaving only the "local" designation.

The hotel's general manager, who is Taiwanese, has been accused of deliberately cutting down the Chinese flag, sparking further outrage. Chinese netizens have called for a boycott of the hotel, with one user stating, "If they don't respect our country, then we shouldn't give them our money."

As the controversy continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the hotel will respond to the public's concerns. For now, the hotel's apology has been deemed insufficient, and the incident has left a sour taste in the mouths of many Chinese citizens.
