Honor of Kings Unveils 18 New Skins for Chinese New Year, Sparking Mixed Reactions
In the days leading up to the Chinese New Year, the wildly popular mobile game "Honor of Kings" (also known as "King of Glory" and "Wangzhe Rongyao" in China) made a splash with its much-anticipated release of new skins for its heroes. The game, developed by Tencent, has a massive player base in China and around the world, and the annual Lunar New Year event has become a staple for fans to snag new, limited-edition skins.

This year, Honor of Kings unveiled 18 new skins during the holiday, including a special series for the Dragon Dance Festival. Among the heroes receiving new skins were Zhong Kui, Diaochan, Ao Bing, and more. Fans eagerly shared their excitement on social media, discussing their favorite skins and sharing tips on how to maximize the benefits of in-game offers and promotions.
However, not all reactions were positive. Some users criticized the sheer number of skins released, joking that the developers were "hungry" for profit. They also expressed concern about the potential for over-commercialization in the game, suggesting that Tencent focus more on gameplay improvements and less on flooding players with new skins.
Despite the mixed reactions, the new skins generated significant buzz on Chinese social media platforms like Weibo. Fans shared their in-game purchases, asking friends and fellow players which heroes they had received skins for and where they ranked the new designs on a "red" (good) and "black" (bad) scale. Some users even tried to gauge how many new skins they could acquire during the holiday, vying for a chance to collect them all.
To capitalize on the excitement surrounding the new skins, Tencent offered numerous promotions and incentives for players. One popular offer included a special lottery for the Dragon Dance skins, with contestants having a chance to win one of the new designs. Additionally, players could purchase a "Lucky 60 Card" for 680 RMB, which granted access to a variety of perks, including exclusive discounts on the new skins.
As part of the holiday celebration, Tencent also announced a special event for February 9th, the day before the Chinese New Year. On that day, players who logged in and completed their first daily quest were guaranteed to receive a legendary "historical" skin. These rare skins are highly coveted by players and are typically only available through limited-time events or special lotteries.
To further entice players, Tencent rolled out time-limited promotions for their in-game currency, "Dragon Coins," allowing users to purchase the new skins at a discounted rate. Some players took to social media to share their strategies for maximizing their rewards, including purchasing the skins directly from the game's in-app store and then utilizing discounted "Dragon Coins" to buy more skins.
However, amidst the excitement surrounding the new skins, controversy arose when a popular user in the gaming community accused Tencent of using the annual event as an opportunity to promote the Time Youth group, a Chinese boy band that had recently signed on as the game's spokesperson. The user complained that the partnership had led to an increase in promotional content within the game and urged players not to use the group's name to criticize the game or its developers.
Despite the mixed reactions, the annual Lunar New Year event remains an important tradition for Honor of Kings players, providing them with new and exciting content to engage with throughout the holiday season. As the excitement surrounding the new skins begins to die down, players eagerly await the next update and wonder what new content and promotions Tencent will unveil next.
