Lead Poisoning Crisis Uncovered at Chinese Kindergarten
A recent investigation into lead poisoning in children at a kindergarten in TianShui, China, has revealed a shocking case of negligence and deceit. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for increased oversight and accountability in the country's food safety and education sectors.

21 July 2025
At the center of the scandal is Hesh Baixin Kindergarten, where several individuals, including the principal and kitchen staff, have been accused of intentionally adding toxic and harmful substances to food served to children. The investigation found that the kindergarten had been using yellow pigment, believed to be the source of lead, in food preparation, resulting in abnormal blood lead levels in children and staff.
The incident came to light in July 2025, when authorities launched an investigation into reports of children experiencing lead poisoning. By July 8, 2025, it was announced that out of 251 children at the kindergarten, 233 had abnormal blood lead levels, with only 18 being normal. Teachers at the school were also affected.

The investigation has identified several key individuals responsible for the poisoning, including He Mouxia, a chef at the kindergarten, who is accused of purchasing yellow pigment online and incorporating it into food. Other individuals, including Zhu Moulin, Li Moufang, Wen Moufang, Niu Mouyuan, and An Mouling, are alleged to have added toxic and harmful non-food raw materials into food during preparation.
The incident has highlighted critical vulnerabilities in the food supply chain, particularly concerning the sourcing and regulation of non-food grade additives. It has also underscored the need for stricter oversight on ingredients used in food production, even in seemingly minor settings like kindergartens.
The investigation has also revealed a disturbing lack of accountability and oversight at the kindergarten, with allegations of deliberate concealment of the issue. Reports suggest that some children exhibited blood lead anomalies as early as May 2024, but the kindergarten deliberately concealed the issue.
In response to the incident, the Gansu Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government established an investigation team to conduct a higher-level inquiry into the matter. Eight suspects related to the case have been criminally detained, and medical experts from Gansu and Shaanxi provinces have collaboratively developed a treatment plan for the affected children.
The incident has sparked widespread public outrage, with many calling for increased accountability and oversight in the education and food safety sectors. Social media sentiment has been overwhelmingly negative, with many users expressing anger and distrust towards the kindergarten and regulatory authorities.
The incident has also highlighted broader concerns about food safety regulations, oversight in educational institutions, and the integrity of testing and medical procedures. Many users are emphasizing the need for stronger supervision to prevent similar incidents.
In the wake of the incident, there have been calls for comprehensive and ongoing support for the affected children and their families. The incident has also sparked demands for increased transparency and accountability in the country's education and food safety sectors.
As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen how the incident will impact the country's education and food safety sectors. However, one thing is clear - the public will be watching closely to ensure that those responsible are held accountable and that measures are taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
