The $399 Robot Duck Developers Can't Get Their Hands On Is Made in Shenzhen

Microduck, a 399-dollar open-source robot duck from Hugging Face, took $2.6 million in orders in 24 hours — and every one of the talking, waddling experiment platforms is assembled by a Shenzhen hardware firm. The sold-out launch shows where open-source robotics gets built, and at what price.

The hottest robot of 2026 cannot vacuum a floor, wash a dish, or carry anything heavier than a marker. Microduck is a 25-centimetre, 800-gram duck whose beak is a small gripper, made to waddle, quack, and serve as a programmable platform for people learning to teach machines. On August 27, the robotics arm of AI community Hugging Face opened pre-orders at $399. Within 24 hours the order book passed $2.6 million — more than 5,000 ducks, a sale every four seconds at peak — and the waiting list stretched to four to six months. The company's notice put it plainly: "the community ordered too many ducks."

For Hugging Face, the open-source repository turned robotics company whose CEO Clem Delangue unveiled the duck with the words "welcome to the era of open-source affordable robots," the machine is a bet that home robotics needs its equivalent of the Raspberry Pi — a cheap, hackable device that students and developers can program rather than admire. Microduck ships with fifteen motors, a camera, lidar, and seven preset behaviours; owners can retrain it with reinforcement learning, as Delangue demonstrated by teaching a duck gymnastics on stage. Its chief scientist has said he wants cumulative sales of around 20,000, roughly the record for any robot product — a target the duck is on pace to pass before the backlog clears.

The part of the story Chinese readers seized on is what the duck is made of and where. The manufacturer is Seeed Studio, an open-source hardware firm in Shenzhen that also builds Hugging Face's previous desktop robot; its main controller runs on a chip from Rockchip, a Chinese designer listed in Shanghai. A widely shared post by the commentator Shuangye noted the duck arrived a day after reports that Nvidia plans to buy Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, and called it a low-cost "embodied AI" platform for students — open algorithms on closed hardware. Within days, Rockchip's shares hit their daily trading limit, and "machine duck concept" became a stock-market tag.

There is a quiet reversal here for an outside reader weaned on headlines about China's robot ambitions. The flagship of Western open-source consumer robotics is not merely sold into China; it is fabricated there, cheaply enough that a hobbyist's impulse buy costs $399 instead of several thousand dollars. Shenzhen's supply chains — the reason a start-up can source motors, lidar and a chip and ship a new design in months — are the substrate under the duck. Domestic coverage of China's own homegrown chip and hardware push has made the same point from the other direction, as our earlier reporting on phone makers building a Chinese chip stack described.

The duck's own limitations are the joke, and the point. It runs for about an hour on a charge and cannot do chores; what it does is let anyone write code that moves a real body. The backlog means most of its new owners will wait until winter to start.
