Tensions Escalate Along Thai-Cambodian Border Amid Fears of Regional Instability
The Thai-Cambodian border conflict, a long-standing issue with roots in early 20th-century border delimitations, has once again escalated, drawing international attention and concern. The area around the Preah Vihear temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has been a particular flashpoint.

24 July 2025
In May 2025, tensions flared when a Cambodian soldier was killed in an exchange of fire between Thai and Cambodian forces. The situation worsened dramatically on July 24, 2025, when Thai and Cambodian soldiers engaged in cross-border firing, leading to Thailand's use of F-16 fighter jets to destroy Cambodian military facilities near the Preah Vihear temple. Thai military reports state that nine civilians were killed and 14 injured from Cambodian rocket attacks, prompting Thailand to close all land borders with Cambodia.
The Thai government, under Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, finds itself in a precarious position, both domestically and internationally. Despite expressing a desire to de-escalate tensions through diplomatic channels, the conflict has stoked nationalist sentiments on both sides, complicating resolution efforts.
The economic impact of the conflict is already being felt, with the closure of the border disrupting trade and livelihoods in the region. Thailand's use of air power represents a significant escalation, suggesting a willingness to employ overwhelming force to assert territorial claims.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has expressed concern over the situation, urging both countries to exercise restraint and seek a peaceful resolution. However, given the deep historical and emotional significance of the disputed area, finding a solution acceptable to both sides will prove challenging.
Internally, both governments face pressure from nationalist elements to take a hard line, limiting their room for maneuver in negotiations. As the conflict continues, the risk of further escalation and the potential for broader regional instability remain high.
The Thai-Cambodian border conflict, with its complex blend of historical grievances, territorial disputes, and nationalist politics, threatens to destabilize the region and presents a significant challenge to the diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a lasting peace.
