Marriage in Limbo: When Love and Wealth Are Out of Reach
The reality of marriage for many individuals is far removed from the idealized notions of love and financial security that are often portrayed in media and societal expectations. In recent years, a concerning trend has emerged in rural China, where the number of marriages has been steadily declining. According to data from an agricultural county in the Huang-Huai-Hai region, the number of marriages in 2024 was over 4,100, a decrease of approximately 1,000 compared to 2023, and a whopping 3,000 fewer than in 2019. This phenomenon has sparked heated discussions among experts and villagers alike, with many attributing the decline to the increasing difficulty faced by rural youths in finding suitable partners.
