The Chengdu Emergency Bureau and Meteorological Bureau have jointly issued a reminder, urging citizens to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. The reminder includes entering a state of emergency for rainstorm defense, closely monitoring the latest weather updates, and taking measures to prevent and respond to potential disasters such as urban flooding, mountain floods, landslides, and mudslides. Authorities have advised schools and kindergartens in high-risk areas to suspend classes, and units can choose to suspend work, production, or business. Outdoor and underground operations have been halted, and personnel in mountainous areas and those living in dangerous buildings have been relocated.
The severe weather warning system has been activated in response to the heavy rainfall in Chengdu, with the city's meteorological bureau issuing a red alert for heavy rain. According to the warning, the central urban area is experiencing widespread heavy rain to extremely heavy rain, with some areas expected to receive over 100mm of rainfall within a three-hour period or experience rainfall intensity exceeding 70mm per hour. The affected areas include several districts in Chengdu, namely Jinjiang, Qingyang, Jinniu, Wuhou, Chenghua, High-Tech West, and High-Tech South.
The heavy rainfall has caused significant disruptions to daily life, with risks of flooding, traffic disruptions, and potential damage to infrastructure. The Sichuan Provincial Department of Water Resources and the Sichuan Provincial Meteorological Bureau have also issued an orange alert for mountain floods, which is the third such alert this month. The alert indicates a heightened risk of flooding in mountainous areas, and residents are advised to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
As the heavy rains battered the city of Chengdu, local residents and authorities scrambled to respond to the deluge. Many streets in the city were inundated with water, with some areas experiencing flooding depths of up to 1 meter. The heavy rains also caused disruptions to traffic, with some roads becoming impassable due to the high water levels. The city's subway system and underground facilities were also affected by the flooding, with some stations experiencing water ingress.
In response to the emergency, the city's government and emergency services sprang into action, deploying personnel and resources to assist with the relief efforts. The authorities also issued guidelines for citizens to follow, including avoiding outdoor activities, staying away from flooded areas, and keeping a safe distance from any potential hazards. The local government has established a comprehensive relief system, which includes evacuation operations, food and shelter distribution, and medical care. Emergency services, including firefighters, police, and paramedics, are working tirelessly to rescue stranded residents and provide support to affected communities. The relief efforts are being coordinated by the Chengdu municipal government, with support from national and international organizations.
