Medical Scandal Rocks China: Student's Admission Qualifications Fabricated
A recent investigation by the National Health Commission of China has uncovered serious violations of medical ethics and regulations by two individuals, Xiao and Dong. The investigation was prompted by a report from Xiao's wife, alleging that he had violated medical ethics and discipline. The findings revealed that Xiao, a former deputy director of the thoracic surgery department at the China-Japan Friendship Hospital, had engaged in serious misconduct during a surgery in July 2024, prioritizing his personal emotions over the patient's safety. He had also engaged in improper relationships with multiple women, including Dong, while still married.

As a result, Xiao's medical license has been revoked, and he has been banned from working in the medical field for five years. The China-Japan Friendship Hospital has also been fined and ordered to rectify its management practices. The hospital has taken disciplinary action against Xiao, expelling him from the party and terminating his employment contract.
The investigation also found that Dong, a student at the Peking Union Medical College, had falsified her application materials when applying for the college's "4+4" clinical medicine program in 2019. She had submitted fake transcripts and had not completed the required pre-medical courses. Specifically, she fabricated four courses worth 16 credits, including University Physics AI, University Physics AII, Organic Chemistry B, and Inorganic Chemistry B, which did not meet the admission requirements for the program. Furthermore, her doctoral dissertation in 2023 was found to have a repetition rate of over 20% with another graduate's dissertation from Beijing University of Science and Technology, indicating serious academic dishonesty and plagiarism.
Consequently, Dong's graduation certificate, degree certificate, medical qualification certificate, and medical practitioner's license have all been revoked. The Peking Union Medical College is currently undergoing a thorough investigation and reform to address the loopholes in its management practices. The college is conducting a comprehensive evaluation and reform of the "4+4" pilot program, which will scrutinize the program's management structure, clinical internship protocols, thesis defense and review processes, as well as the ideological and political education of students.
The National Health Commission of China has vowed to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and to hold those responsible accountable. The commission will also conduct a nationwide inspection of medical institutions to ensure that they are complying with medical ethics and regulations. The Beijing Municipal Health Commission has taken decisive action against both Dong and Xiao, revoking Dong's certificates and imposing penalties on Xiao. The combined efforts of the Beijing Municipal Health Commission and the hospital aim to prevent similar incidents in the future and maintain the public's trust in the medical system.

The Chinese government has demonstrated its commitment to addressing public concerns and ensuring the integrity of its medical education system. The case serves as a reminder that no individual is above the law, and that accountability is essential for maintaining public trust in the medical profession. The rectification measures underway will ultimately contribute to a more robust and trustworthy medical education system, one that prioritizes meritocracy, fairness, and the wellbeing of patients. As the investigation continues, it is essential to exercise patience and allow the authorities to thoroughly examine the "4+4" pilot program and its participants, with the goal of preventing similar incidents and ensuring the highest standards of integrity and ethics in the medical profession.
