Solar Overtakes Coal as China's Largest Power Source for the First Time
China's installed solar capacity has edged past coal for the first time — a historic crossover in the world's biggest power system that state media celebrated, then immediately qualified: capacity is not generation, and the sun still sets.
A quiet line in the National Energy Administration's data, reported this week, marks a shift in the world's largest power system: as of the end of July, China's installed solar capacity had reached 1.286 billion kilowatts, overtaking coal — at 1.285 billion kilowatts — for the first time. The country that built its industrial rise on coal now has more solar panels mounted than coal-fired turbines, and the state's own broadcasters led with the word "historic."
The milestone travelled quickly. It surfaced on Baidu's trending board and was picked over at length on Weibo, where CCTV Finance's account walked viewers through what the number does and does not mean. Solar installations in China now lead those of any single country and exceed the combined photovoltaic capacity of the European Union, the report noted; Jiangsu, the manufacturing province, became in mid-August the first province to pass 100 million kilowatts of solar on its own, with distributed rooftop installations — panels on homes and factories rather than desert-scale farms — making up nearly seventy percent of it.
Scale, though, is not the same as electricity. The report was careful, in a way that became part of the story itself, to flag the caveat: solar's capacity factor is far lower than coal's, because the sun sets. Measured by actual generation, coal remains China's backbone and will for years to come, standing by as the system's safety net. A panel fleet that has just edged past coal in name still cannot be counted on through a windless, overcast winter evening peak.
What happens next is the real subject of the coverage: the attempt to build what Chinese planners call a "new power system" around an intermittent source. The recipe as described runs from giant pumped-storage and battery installations — likened to "power banks" for the grid — to giving coal a new job as a flexible, peaking plant rather than a baseload workhorse, to experiments in solar-plus-storage, solar thermal, and hydrogen. The phrase used was that solar must move from "living off the weather" to being dispatchable and predictable: generated when needed, sent where needed, used well.
For an outside reader, the significance is less the ribbon-cutting than the trajectory. Coal's share of Chinese generating capacity has been ceding ground for a decade; the crossover point — the moment the largest clean source became the largest source, period — has now been crossed years into a build-out that shows no sign of slowing. The open question, exactly as the state commentary framed it, is whether China can convert its unmatched ability to deploy panels into the harder, less photogenic work of grids, storage, and market rules that make the power usable when the sun is not shining.
