Musk, Cook and Nvidia's Huang at the Head Table: Inside Trump's State Dinner for Xi
The White House state banquet that closed Xi Jinping's Washington visit seated Elon Musk, Tim Cook, Jensen Huang and Lisa Su with the Trumps at the head table, played 'The Moon Represents My Heart' and served American food with Chinese elements — after a day in which both sides announced a new trade arrangement.
Donald Trump and his wife Melania welcomed Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan into a red-draped White House on Thursday evening for a state banquet, the closing act of a Washington visit that has now completed an exchange of state visits between the two countries inside six months. Trump had already broken with more than sixty years of protocol by meeting Xi's plane in person on Wednesday; by Thursday night the two leaders had held talks in the Oval Office and shared a dinner at which the head table held the chiefs of Tesla, Nvidia, Apple and AMD.
The substance came in the morning. At their talks, Xi said the two countries' economic teams had reached "a new joint arrangement" in their latest round of negotiations — good news, he said, for both countries' industries, their ordinary people and the global economy. Cooperation was a two-way street: the two sides should "lengthen the list of cooperation and shorten the list of problems," he said, in remarks carried by CCTV's readout of the meeting. Trump called the visit a great one and told the teams to keep talking towards a better agreement. Both sides also agreed to continue a dialogue on artificial intelligence — Xi argued the two AI powers should "each develop their strengths rather than wall each other off" — and to support each other in hosting the 2026 APEC summit and the G20 meeting. Beijing had framed the whole visit around its "three no-changes" reading of the relationship before the talks began.
The dinner was staged as a cultural overture. Video posted by Trump's son Eric showed the room in red — red tablecloths, red flowers — colours of warmth and celebration in Chinese culture, as RT's Chinese service pointed out. The band played "The Moon Represents My Heart," a Chinese pop standard, on the night before Mid-Autumn Festival (the song made Baidu's trending board within hours). The menu, published by the First Lady's office, promised American ingredients cooked with Chinese elements (the full menu and decor, via HK01), and Trump's gift to Xi was a bald-eagle sculpture he had helped design himself (HK01).
Trump's toast leaned on reciprocity: having been received warmly in Beijing in May, he said, Americans wished "to treat you with the same warmth" (video via RT). Relations between the two countries were "never more harmonious than now," he told the room (The Paper). Xi's toast reached further back: two centuries of trade since the young American republic first shipped for China, the two countries' wartime alliance against Japan, the ping-pong diplomacy that "used a small ball to move the big ball" half a century ago — and one smaller story, of an American named Sai Kaosi who more than two decades ago paid to support Yin Yuzhen, a Chinese farmer who has spent her life planting trees against the desert (the toast, in full, via CCTV). "Make America Great Again and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation," he said, "can absolutely achieve each other" (HK01).
Then there was the guest list. China Media Group named Elon Musk, Nvidia's Jensen Huang, Blackstone's Stephen Schwarzman and OpenAI's Sam Altman among the business figures present (the list, as announced by CMG); Amazon's founder Jeff Bezos was photographed there too (CCTV's footage of the arrivals). At the head table, RT reported, Musk sat with the Trumps alongside Huang, Tim Cook and AMD's Lisa Su; a Chinese commentator posted the seating chart and Chinese readers parsed it the way a wedding banquet at home would be parsed — hosts in the centre, guests of honour ranked outward, seat by seat. Maye Musk, Elon's mother, used the moment to say on X that she "likes going to China" because it is "clean and safe" (it trended on Baidu's board). The tone had been set a day earlier at the welcome ceremony, when Xi announced that two Chengdu pandas are headed for Zoo Atlanta and Trump smiled and nodded.
What was not on the table was the text of that "new joint arrangement." Until the trade teams publish what they agreed, the dinner's friendly arithmetic — a longer list of cooperation, a shorter list of problems — remains a promise to be checked at the next two checkpoints both leaders named: the 2026 APEC summit and the G20.
