Egg Smuggling on the Rise at US-Mexico Border Amid Ongoing Shortage
The United States is facing an unprecedented "egg shortage" that has lasted for months, leading to a desperate trend of Americans flocking to Mexico to buy eggs, with some even resorting to smuggling them across the border to meet their daily needs. The year 2025 has seen a perfect storm of factors contributing to the shortage, including a surge in food prices that began in 2020. According to the US Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service, food prices have risen consistently over the past few years, with a staggering 9.9% increase in 2022, followed by smaller but still significant hikes of 5.8% and 2.3% in 2023 and 2024, respectively.
