Hebei Satellite TV Topped the Ratings for a Night, Thanks to Sun Yingsha

The opening ceremony of Hebei's provincial games produced the province's biggest TV moment in years after table tennis world champion Sun Yingsha carried the torch — pushing a regional broadcaster past every satellite channel in China, briefly including CCTV News.

Hebei Satellite TV Topped the Ratings for a Night, Thanks to Sun Yingsha

Hebei's provincial games opened in Tangshan on Thursday evening with the state of the art in regional television: a torch relay. Its sixth runner was Sun Yingsha, the province's own table tennis world champion, making her first appearance as a torchbearer — and for the hour she was on screen, Hebei Satellite TV out-rated every satellite channel in China, at one point passing CCTV News (@麦子哥哥QaQ).

A ratings screenshot shared after the broadcast showed Hebei TV at No. 1 nationwide in its slot, ahead of Dragon TV, Hunan TV and the rest of the provincial satellite table (@麦子哥哥QaQ). The ceremony's stream, the posts add, drew more than a million concurrent online viewers. Commenters were quick with the context: as far as anyone could tell, the channel had never topped the national table before.

For a provincial broadcaster, an opening ceremony is ordinarily a civic obligation of a broadcast — local officials on the dais, a stadium full of delegations, an audience of the participants' relatives. What changed on Thursday was who was carrying the torch. Sun did not compete; she jogged a leg of the relay and joined the mass singalong of "Yangguang zong zai fengyu hou" — "after the storm comes the sun" — with the ceremony's performers (@三农频道). It was enough. Her fanbase is among the largest in Chinese sport, big enough that even non-competition appearances reorder a national ratings table; her shock exit from this month's China Smash, and the emergency-room report said to precede it, had already turned her workload into a national debate (An Emergency-Room Report Before Sun Yingsha's Upset Loss Reopens China's Athlete-Workload Debate).

Hebei TV's official account, unaccustomed to the position, replied with a thank-you that promptly became the story's second headline: "感谢大家支持,咱也是好起来了" — "Thanks for the support; look at us, getting good at this" (@河北卫视).

The games continue through the week on the same channel, with considerably less star power attached. Whether viewers keep coming for Hebei's wrestlers and youth swimmers — or whether the province's first ratings crown lives and dies with one torchbearer — is the question its ratings desk gets to answer next.
