Title: Typhoon Dusu Rui Wreaks Havoc in Quanzhou, Threatens Mayday Concert Venue
28 July 2023
Quanzhou, Fujian - In the wake of Typhoon Dusu Rui's landfall off the coast of Jinjiang, Fujian on July 28, strong winds and heavy rains have caused significant damage to various parts of Quanzhou. The most severe impact appears to be on the Quanzhou Straits Stadium, the main venue for the upcoming Mayday concert, which is set to take place in August.
The insulation layer on the stadium's roof and outer walls has been torn apart by the relentless wind, raising concerns about the safety of the impending concert. This revelation sparked heated discussions on Chinese social media platforms, with many expressing their shock, concern, and frustration over the situation.
On Weibo, a video shared by "Talk Now" showed the stadium under the typhoon's wrath, further fuelling public anxiety about the state of the venue. Many netizens expressed their surprise at the extent of the damage, with some expressing sympathy for Mayday fans who were eagerly anticipating the concert.
One user commented, "Holy shit, is there any local friend who can tell us if it's true or not?" Another said, "So big? The inlanders have seen it all. I thought a typhoon would blow some flowers and plants, but this could hurt people." A netizen named Sugar-a-bag-of-fruit-a-bag shared a video from Guangzhou Weather, which emphasized the importance of staying indoors during a typhoon, citing potential dangers posed by flying debris and other building materials.
The arrival of Typhoon Dusu Rui also caused widespread power outages in Quanzhou, with the Beifeng pressurization station temporarily halting production due to a power outage affecting Bodong Road, Pudong Road, and the surrounding areas. The outage was attributed to the 5th typhoon "Dusu Rui" impact on the National Grid Beifeng area line.
While some netizens expressed solidarity with those affected by the storm, others made light of the situation, posting humorous comments and memes. One user shared a video of someone riding a battery car that fell during the storm, commenting, "Such a big storm, families do not go out." Another user shared a video from "the head of the mushroom class," making light of the situation by saying, "At 9:33 am on July 28, Quanzhou City Water Supply Company Beifeng pressurization station power outage, the reason for the power outage for the National Grid Beifeng area line by the 5th typhoon 'Dusu Rui' impact, resulting in power outages throughout the area. Quanzhou Power Supply Company maintenance center said that the power supply can not be restored within a short period of time, now the Beifeng pressurization station needs to temporarily stop production."
The storm has been widely discussed on social media, with some users drawing comparisons between coastal cities like Quanzhou and American Manhattan or Russian Vladivostok in terms of economic development. However, others have expressed concern over the frequency of typhoons in these areas and their potential impact on infrastructure
