Beijing Olympics Marred by Controversy as Chinese Social Media Users Gloating Over South Korean Athletes' Mistakes

The 2022 Beijing Olympics have kicked off to a contentious start, with South Korean athletes already experiencing three mishaps on the first day. The incidents have sparked a flurry of reactions on Chinese social media platform Weibo, with many users gloating over the mistakes.

One user, "@领导我是小明的微博视频", quipped, "Haha, it's too embarrassing, really not intentional? But our netizens are enjoying the show, finally breaking through once." Another user, "@问君何笑的微博视频", chimed in, "It's just the first day, and there's still more to come, waiting for the next ones to break through."

The incidents have also spawned a wave of nationalist sentiment, with some users invoking the words of Chinese writer Yang Jiang, who once said, "I don't argue, it doesn't mean you can take advantage of me; I'm kind, it doesn't mean I can be bullied; I can understand, it doesn't mean I can accept; I don't provoke, it doesn't mean I'm afraid; I'm reasonable, it doesn't mean I won't fight back."

One user, "@AA默默8665的微博视频", quoted Yang's words, adding, "If kindness gets no respect, the most direct way to resolve relationships is to fight back. If you lower your head, and they take advantage of you, then lift your head, stand up straight, and knock them down with all means necessary."

The debate has also taken on a feminist tone, with some users invoking the words of Yang Jiang's husband, Qian Zhongshu, who once said, "A woman's best state is to have a proud character, a good temper, and a stable mindset, not belonging to anyone, nor owning anyone, not fearing loss or offense."

One user, "@小懒猫爱吃糖99的微博视频", quoted Qian's words, adding, "This is not just a expectation for women, but a guide for everyone's attitude towards life."

However, not all reactions have been positive, with some users expressing disappointment and frustration at the mistakes made by the South Korean athletes. One user, "@张本智和早田希娜爆冷出局", lamented, "It's nothing, the neighboring little Japan is also lightly fragmented. The national flag is originally a combination of predictions, pinching a small stick, pinching a small Japan, and breaking it together."

The controversy has also sparked concerns about the propriety of gloating over the mistakes of other athletes. One user, "@奥运第一天韩国人已经破防三次了#", wrote, "Is this really worth celebrating? Isn't it a bit too much?"

As the Olympics continue, it remains to be seen how the controversy will unfold, and whether the incidents will have a lasting impact on the atmosphere of the games.
