Body of Missing Chengdu Woman Found 19 Days After Disappearance, Sparking Reflection on Family Care and Social Responsibility

The tragic incident of a 28-year-old woman from Chengdu who went missing on New Year's Eve and was found dead 19 days later has sparked a social reflection on the need for family care and social support for young adults. According to the police investigation, surveillance footage from the "Sky Net" system showed that the woman, Liu, got into a taxi on the evening of the Chinese New Year's Eve and was dropped off near the riverbank greenway on Cuibin West Road in Chengdu at around 1:30 am on the first day of the Lunar New Year. After getting out of the taxi, Liu walked out of the camera's range, and her phone signal disappeared around 3:00 am.

During the 19 days she was missing, her family, the police, and other parties made extensive efforts to locate her, but to no avail. Her shoes and clothing were discovered on the riverbank and in the river, fueling concerns about her safety. Unfortunately, on February 15, a fisherman discovered her body in the river, bringing an end to the search. Liu's father had previously expressed regret and guilt over not being able to provide her with sufficient care and attention, revealing that on the night she disappeared, Liu had told him during a video call that she felt her family didn't care about her.

The family is now left to grieve and come to terms with their loss, and they have expressed gratitude to those who had supported them during the search for Liu. In a heartbreaking statement, they said, "We want to thank everyone who has been searching for our daughter and caring about her safety. Although our wish for her safe return was not fulfilled, we appreciate the kindness and efforts of all those involved." The family's statement serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of showing love and care to those around us, and the devastating consequences that can result when we fail to do so.

As people mourn the loss of the young woman, they are also calling for greater care and support to be provided to young people. However, some commentators have pointed out that this incident also highlights a broader societal issue - the trend of "infantilization," where individuals prioritize being taken care of over taking responsibility. As one commentator noted, the current social atmosphere prioritizes being able to cry loudly and attract attention, rather than shouldering responsibilities. This has led to concerns about the kind of society we are creating, where young adults are not encouraged to take responsibility for themselves. Ultimately, the incident serves as a reminder that young adults still need care and support, but also that society needs to promote a culture of independence and responsibility.
