On February 14th, Taiwanese coast guards reportedly acted violently towards the Chinese fishing boat, causing two crew members to lose their lives. Taiwanese authorities initially claimed that the coast guard personnel acted in accordance with the law during the incident, but later admitted, after strong calls from both the families of the victims and the Chinese people, that the incident occurred due to a collision between the Taiwanese patrol ship and the Chinese fishing boat.
The Taiwanese authorities have been criticized for their excessive and violent response towards Chinese fishing boats in the Taiwan Strait in recent years. As a result, many Chinese fishermen have suffered from significant economic losses and their feelings have been hurt. In a statement, China's Taiwan Affairs Office (国务院台办) urged Taiwan to take responsibility for these incidents, emphasizing the importance of respecting human life and disclosing the truth.
China's Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson, Zhu Fenglian, called out the hypocrisy and audacity of the Taiwanese authorities, stating that their actions have not only caused harm to Chinese fishermen but have also severely damaged the relationship between the people of the two sides and their sense of solidarity.
Zhu Fenglian demanded that Taiwan provide a clear explanation to the families of the victims and the people of both China and Taiwan, disclose the truth of the incident, and hold the responsible parties accountable. She also expressed strong indignation towards Taiwan's insensitive and cold-hearted response to the incident.
The Chinese government is determined to protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese fishermen and will not allow similar incidents to occur in the future. In response to the recent tensions between Chinese and Taiwanese coast guards, China's Ministry of National Defense warned Taiwan that they should be prepared to handle sudden incidents in the Taiwan Strait.
The incident has sparked discussions on Chinese social media platforms, with many netizens expressing anger and frustration towards Taiwan's actions. Some have called for punitive measures against Taiwan, while others have expressed their hope to see Taiwan held accountable for their actions.
In the past, China and Taiwan have had a long history of political tensions and disputes. This latest incident involving the Chinese fishing boat and Taiwanese coast guards has further strained their relationship. The demand for a clear explanation from Taiwan is seen as an effort by the Chinese government to assert its authority and protect the rights and interests of Chinese fishermen in the Taiwan Strait.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how Taiwan will respond to the Chinese government's demands and whether this incident will have any long-term impact on the already strained relationship between China and Taiwan.
In the meantime, the demand for justice and accountability from China's Taiwan Affairs Office serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency, fairness, and respect for human life in addressing such incidents. It also highlights the need for both China and Taiwan to work towards improving their relationship, finding common ground, and fostering a sense of mutual understanding and cooperation for the benefit of their people.
