The controversy began with posts about alleged multiple students suffering from cancer in a tutor team at Zhongshan Hospital No. 2. In response, an official announcement was released by the hospital on August 8th, stating that among those who had studied and worked in the breast cancer center laboratory in recent years, three were diagnosed with cancer in 2023.
The news sparked a flurry of reactions from Weibo netizens, many expressing shock and concern about the incident. Some expressed sympathy for the affected individuals while others expressed suspicion towards the hospital's laboratory practices.
One user wrote: "This is really frightening. I hope they can get proper treatment." Another added: "I don't understand why some people have to go through such difficulties just because they are dedicated to their work."
However, not all reactions were sympathetic. Some Weibo users expressed skepticism towards the hospital and certain individuals, questioning whether there was a connection between laboratory experiments and reagents and the cancer diagnoses.
One user wrote: "The hospital should clarify the situation immediately to avoid causing panic and arousing people's suspicion." Another comment read: "Who cares about the details of a man who is just passing by and looking at another level of infidelity, although sympathy is expressed for the deceased but the pressure on the hot search is not."
Additionally, some users directed inflammatory remarks towards certain individuals, with one comment saying: "Kicking out Huang from the group chat? That's really heartless." Another user wrote: "The hospital is truly disgusting. There must be something fishy going on."
Despite the controversy and inflammatory remarks, Zhongshan Hospital No. 2 has maintained that they have yet to find any conclusive evidence linking laboratory experiments and reagents with the cancer diagnoses of the affected individuals. The situation remains under investigation.
The incident sparks a broader discussion on the impact of laboratory work and its potential health risks, as well as the responsibility of institutions in addressing such concerns. With more attention and scrutiny likely to fall on the hospital's practices, it remains to be seen how they will
