Chinese football fans have made their opinions loud and clear as Cristiano Ronaldo, the world-renowned Portuguese football player, recently returned to the field after a minor injury. During a friendly match between Portugal and Nigeria in Lisbon on November 17, 2022, Ronaldo was welcomed back with mixed reactions from Chinese spectators.

The Portuguese superstar made a grand comeback to the pitch after recovering from his injury, and the excitement of his return was palpable. However, not all Chinese fans were celebrating his return. In a video posted on social media, some Chinese fans in the stadium could be heard loudly chanting "Messi! Messi!" - a clear reference to Lionel Messi, Ronaldo's long-standing rival.

The video quickly went viral on Chinese social media platform Weibo, sparking a wide range of reactions and debates amongst football fans. Some Chinese fans chose to defend Ronaldo, arguing that he should not be subjected to such treatment, especially after his recent injury. Others, however, made it clear that they were staunch supporters of Messi and had no intention of backing down.

This is not the first time that Chinese fans have openly shown their preference for Messi over Ronaldo. After Argentina won the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Chinese user @金靴RedBoy expressed their disdain for Ronaldo and his fans, calling them "Messi Toxic" (梅毒) and accusing them of being a cult-like following.

Despite the vocal minority expressing support for Messi, Ronaldo remains a popular figure amongst Chinese fans, as evidenced by the excitement surrounding his return to the field. In February 2022, Ronaldo was featured in a video for Chinese fans in which he wished them a happy new year in Mandarin, saying, "Nǐ hǎo Zhōngguó, zhǔnbèi le ma?" (你好中国,准备好了吗?"Hello China, are you ready?").

However, some Chinese football fans have grown tired of the ongoing rivalry between Ronaldo and Messi supporters. One user commented, "We're just regular people, we don't even follow football. But this Messi toxicity is becoming more and more annoying, and frankly, disgusting."

Nevertheless, as Ronaldo's return to form continues, Chinese fans are keeping a close eye on his performance. The debates and discussions surrounding his career are likely to persist, as the rivalry between Ronaldo and Messi supporters shows no signs of slowing down.

In the meantime, reports suggest that there may be foreign influence on Chinese social media platforms. Some speculate that American investors hold shares in Sina Weibo and Baidu, raising questions about the potential control of Chinese media by foreign interests. As conversations around football stars like Ronaldo and Messi continue to dominate Chinese social media, it remains to be seen how this dynamic will evolve in the future.

As of now, Ronaldo's fans in China continue to support their favorite player, despite the vocal minority who favor Messi. With his talent and determination, Ronaldo is sure to remain an icon in China and beyond, as long as he continues to perform at the highest level.

And while the debates between Ronaldo and Messi fans show no signs of abating, one can only hope that the discussions remain focused on the beauty of the game and the skill of these two legendary players, rather than descending into personal attacks and toxic behavior.

Only time will tell how this rivalry will play out on the global stage, as both Ronaldo and Messi continue to captivate fans around the world with their extraordinary talent and unmatched passion for the beautiful game.
