From Factory Boy to President: The Inspirational Rise of Lee Jae-myung

Lee Jae-myung, the 21st President of South Korea, officially took office on June 4, marking a new chapter in Korean politics. This grassroots leader, with his inspiring story and practical policies, has brought new hope to South Korea. As a child, Lee Jae-myung worked in a factory after elementary school, lying about his age to get the job, and later became a lawyer and a human rights activist, influenced by former President Roh Moo-hyun and the 1980 Gwangju Uprising.

Born into a poor family in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, Lee Jae-myung was one of seven children. After elementary school, he falsified his age to enter a factory and became a child laborer. He later attended Korea University's law school and passed the judicial exam, becoming a licensed lawyer. His experiences gave him a deep understanding of the struggles and needs of ordinary people.

As a lawyer, Lee Jae-myung worked as a human rights activist and later joined the liberal Democratic Party, the predecessor of the current ruling party. He ran for mayor of Seongnam City in 2010 and won, implementing various reforms, including reducing the city's historical debt, providing free meals for students, and improving the living environment in old neighborhoods. His efforts earned him recognition and popularity among the people.

Lee Jae-myung's attacks on former President Park Geun-hye further increased his national profile, and he announced his candidacy for the presidency in 2017. Although he lost the party's primary election to Moon Jae-in, he later won the governorship of Gyeonggi Province in 2018. His strong response to the COVID-19 pandemic as governor gained him popularity, which he leveraged to win the party's primary election for the 2021 presidential election.

Despite losing the 2021 election by a narrow margin, Lee Jae-myung remained a prominent figure, advocating for increased social welfare, universal basic income, and reduced economic inequality. He also emphasized the importance of "practical diplomacy," expanding Korea's diplomatic field and promoting regional strategies and global cooperation. On North Korea, Lee Jae-myung seeks to ease military tensions and promote mutual dialogue and exchange.

Lee Jae-myung's inauguration has brought new hope to many Korean people, who support his policies and proposals. His story has also inspired many, proving that with hard work and perseverance, anyone can achieve their dreams. As he faces challenges and criticisms, it is worth watching and anticipating how he will address them and drive Korea's development in the future. With his commitment to serving the people and his practical approach to governance, Lee Jae-myung has become a symbol of hope for a new era in South Korean politics, one that prioritizes the needs of the people and seeks to create a more just and equitable society.
