A Reunion Show for Estranged Friends Is Beating China's Hit Dramas

'Hou Hui You Qi' gathers celebrities and esports players who fell out publicly — a 2006 Super Girl rivalry, a benched pro gamer and his old teammate — and has taken the top of Douban's trending chart with a formula China's internet can't stop reading.

A Reunion Show for Estranged Friends Is Beating China's Hit Dramas

The most-watched thing on Chinese television this week, by one measure, is a show whose premise sounds like a threat: old friends who fell out publicly, seated in the same room and asked to talk about it. "Hou Hui You Qi" — roughly, "Meet Again When It's Over" (《后会友期》) — is Mango TV's new reunion format, and on Douban's real-time chart it sat above the season's biggest dramas, a screenshot one viewer posted with the caption: "A few obscure celebrities, killing it dozens of times over."

The "obscure celebrities" are the point. The first drawing-room pairing is Li Na and Xu Fei, rivals from the 2006 season of "Super Girl," the singing contest that was then China's biggest cultural event. This week host Zhang Meng asked Li Na the question bluntly: setting aside every old grievance, as a person, do you like Xu Fei? Li Na's answer — "I do" — drew tens of thousands of likes within hours, and fans immediately exhumed the 2006 bracket: the round where Xu Fei, to protect Li Na from elimination, took on the stronger Tan Weiwei herself and won.

The show's other live wire is the internet's own: Bai Xiaochun and Qingzhi, two young professional esports players whose friendship visibly broke down. Their shipper tag — "Chun-Zhi" — has years of fan archaeology behind it, and fans have been posting the old photos as evidence of how close they once were.

On the show, one of them insists on the word "hate" — the meme that gave Weibo its hashtag, "I'm Bai Xiaochun and I hate it too" (我是白小纯我也恨) — while the wishes he writes down for the future keep coming back to the other. The clip that broke people, as one fan post put it, is an old piece of footage: Bai Xiaochun smiles as Qingzhi walks past with teammates; Qingzhi doesn't look up; only after they're gone does Bai Xiaochun sigh. Qingzhi, meanwhile, answers every probing question with deadpan non-answers — "I went to pick up a package and said hi to Bai Xiaochun and he ignored me" — leaving fans hungry for the old drama they are sure is buried underneath. In a livestream moment that itself trended, he admitted that once fans told him the topic had hit the hot searches, he was too frightened to keep chatting: "Better guard my heart. I need to practice my aim."

The part viewers keep debating has nothing to do with feelings. A widely shared post argued the falling-out was engineered from above: "The mid-tournament substitution — the boss decided long before. When a manager wants someone out, the breakup just gives them the excuse." That reading is why the show has escaped the fandom bubble: Chinese audiences are watching a workplace story about loyalty, redundancy and whether reconciliation is even allowed once management has decided.

Singer Allen Su, himself a talent-show alumnus, has attached a weekly "no spoilers, no steering" rumour-dispelling segment to the phenomenon. The 2006 bracket, meanwhile, has been dug out and bookmarked — against the day the show gets Li Na and Xu Fei to settle their own debts.
