Apple's First Foldable Lands in China at 15,999 Yuan, With 7,998 Yuan Screen Repairs

The iPhone Duo reaches Chinese stores on October 23 from 15,999 yuan, and Apple has already published repair prices that read like a warning: 7,998 yuan for the inner screen. Its long-awaited China AI paperwork arrived the same week.

Apple's first foldable iPhone finally has a Chinese price tag — and a Chinese repair bill to match. The iPhone Duo goes on pre-order on October 16 and reaches stores a week later, starting at 15,999 yuan (about $2,240). Even before launch day, it is expected to be the hardest iPhone to buy in years: an industry estimate puts first-run stock at only six million units worldwide, because the hinge's yield rate caps how many Apple can actually build.

What set Weibo talking this week, though, was not the price of the phone but the price of breaking it. Apple's Chinese service site has quietly listed official out-of-warranty repair prices for the Duo, and a Weibo user assembled them into a single table that ricocheted across the tech accounts.

The arithmetic is sobering. Replacing the inner folding screen costs 7,998 yuan — roughly the price of a flagship Android phone, as the tech outlet 梨视频 put it. The outer screen runs 3,198 yuan, a battery swap 1,898 yuan, the most expensive battery service in iPhone history, and "other damage" starts at 11,998 yuan. The only cheap fix is the 398-yuan surface layer, the frosted polymer film Apple engineered to soften the crease — which, the fine print notes, wears down with use.

The practical takeaway circulating on Chinese tech Weibo is blunt: budget for AppleCare+. Apple's extended-care plan lets American users exchange a damaged Duo for $19, and Chinese buyers expect a comparable deal when local pricing lands.

There is a second clock running under the launch. On September 29, several iPhone models quietly gained Chinese generative-AI filing numbers — including one registered to Apple's Shanghai entity and two belonging to Alibaba's Qwen models — meaning Apple Intelligence, with Alibaba's AI built in, now has the regulatory paperwork to reach Chinese iPhones, the Duo included. For a company whose China AI rollout has been pending for two years, the foldable may be the first device to ship with it.

The competitive context makes the timing pointed. Huawei says its foldables have now shipped more than 20 million units and held over 70% of the domestic folding market in the first half — the field Apple is entering seven years late, against a domestic rival that never left. Chinese supply-chain reporting already calls the Duo the year's hardest phone to secure, echoing the yield problems that dogged its assembly through September.

Reservations open Thursday at 8 p.m. The screens, of course, are already priced.
