Man Sentenced to 15 Years for Forcing Girlfriend to Drink Pesticide in Brutal Murder
A man named Dong Certainfeng was convicted of intentionally killing his girlfriend, Liu, by forcing her to drink pesticide after she tried to end their relationship, and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. The case began when Dong, a man, refused to accept his girlfriend Liu's decision to break up with him. On July 29, 2022, Dong purchased a bottle of pesticide and forced Liu to drink it, leading to her poisoning. Liu later told her family in the intensive care unit about the circumstances surrounding her poisoning, and eventually died due to multiple organ failure caused by the pesticide.

According to the court documents, Dong and Liu had been in a romantic relationship and lived together in a rented house in Cangzhou, Hebei Province. However, their relationship deteriorated when Liu decided to break up with Dong due to his unemployment. Dong refused to accept the breakup and continued to pester Liu, who eventually returned to her hometown to avoid him. On July 29, 2022, Dong convinced Liu to drive him to a job interview, and later took her to a pesticide store where he bought a bottle of "Enemy Grass Fast" pesticide. He then took Liu back to their rented house, locked the door, and forced her to drink the pesticide, saying "You must drink it, you'll die today or tomorrow, either way, you'll die." When Liu refused, Dong physically blocked her and took away her phone to prevent her from contacting her family.
After drinking the pesticide, Liu begged Dong to take her to the hospital, but he refused, saying "I'll watch you die, and when you start foaming at the mouth, I'll know you're dead." It wasn't until 50 minutes later that Dong took Liu to the hospital, where she eventually died on August 18, 2022, due to multiple organ failure caused by the pesticide. Dong was taken into custody by the police on July 31, 2022. The court ruled that Dong's actions constituted intentional homicide, but took into consideration his actions of sending Liu to the hospital for treatment, and subsequently sentenced him to 15 years in prison.
The societal reaction to this verdict has been vehement, with many believing that Dong's actions were heinously cruel and that the sentence was too lenient. Critics argue that the punishment does not adequately reflect the severity of Dong's crimes, given the premeditated and brutal nature of his actions. Many feel that a sentence of 15 years does not serve as a strong enough deterrent for such violent and controlling behavior, particularly in cases of domestic violence and intentional homicide. The case has sparked a broader conversation about gender-based violence, coercive control, and the need for stricter laws and enforcement to protect victims of domestic abuse.
The handling of the case by the court, including the consideration of mitigating factors such as Dong's actions after the crime, has also been subject to scrutiny. While the court's decision reflects the complexity of legal proceedings and the need to consider all aspects of a case, many in the public view the sentence as insufficient given the gravity of the crime. The verdict serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing issues of gender violence and the importance of addressing these problems through both legal means and societal awareness. It highlights the need for continued efforts to prevent such tragedies and to ensure that justice is served in a manner that reflects the severity of the crimes committed.
The case has sparked a nationwide debate on issues such as gender-based violence and the complexities of relationships. Many argue that the perpetrator, Dong, deserves a harsher sentence for his heinous actions, which were characterized by extreme malicious intent. His behavior, which included deceiving his girlfriend, creating a confined environment to coerce her into ingesting the pesticide, and subsequently refusing to seek medical attention, demonstrates a profound disregard for human life. Moreover, the fact that Dong's actions were deemed to be "relatively lighter" because they did not involve overt physical violence has been met with widespread criticism. Many point out that the emotional and psychological torment he inflicted on his girlfriend, including verbal threats and intimidation, constitute a form of violence that should not be underestimated.
The delay in seeking medical attention, which lasted around 40 to 50 minutes, has been perceived as a deliberate attempt to allow the victim to succumb to her injuries. This egregious lack of action has been widely condemned, and many argue that the punishment meted out to Dong is woefully inadequate in light of the severity of his crimes. As the country grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, there is a growing recognition of the need for more effective education and support systems to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. This includes providing resources for individuals, particularly women, who may be trapped in abusive relationships, as well as promoting a culture of respect, empathy, and understanding in relationships. Ultimately, the case serves as a stark reminder of the need for a more nuanced and comprehensive approach to addressing the complex issues surrounding gender-based violence and relationship dynamics.
