Football fans in Hong Kong were left disappointed as superstar Lionel Messi failed to play in a sold-out friendly match between Inter Miami and Kitchee SC on February 24. Frustrated spectators booed and chanted "refund, refund, refund" at the Hong Kong Stadium, where tens of thousands of people had gathered to catch a glimpse of the Argentine icon.

The incident began when Messi, who had recently joined the Major League Soccer (MLS) club Inter Miami, did not participate in the team's previous match against the Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in a friendly match. Coach Phil Neville announced that Messi's absence from that game was due to a groin injury, raising concerns among fans about his condition.

Despite the injury, fans expected Messi to play against Kitchee SC, one of Hong Kong's leading football clubs. However, the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner was once again missing from the starting lineup, only taking part in the team's warm-up exercises.

This unexpected decision left fans puzzled and sparked outrage on Chinese social media platform Weibo. Comments ranged from disappointment and anger to criticisms of Messi's behavior. User @梅西LeoMessi10 sarcastically asked, "How's everything going? Are you satisfied?" while other users expressed their dissatisfaction with Messi, accusing him of being "disrespectful" towards the fans and the host country.

Another Weibo user, @XyYy, compared Messi's situation to an exploding '11 battery,' questioning his decision to only participate in the warm-up exercises. They added, "It's his freedom whether he inserts or doesn't insert the earphone, but you can't meddle with that."

The controversy further escalated when Messi finally spoke out about the issue during a press conference. The superstar admitted that his absence from the Hong Kong match was a result of bad luck, as he had felt pain in his groin during the warm-up prior to the game. He also explained that he had undergone an MRI scan, which confirmed that he was not yet fit to play.

Despite Messi's explanation, some Chinese media continued to criticize the football superstar. An article published by the State-owned news outlet China Daily accused Messi of "disrespecting Chinese culture" and urged him to reflect on his actions. Moreover, the article emphasized that fans should not blindly worship famous athletes and instead, focus on their sportsmanship.

In response to the backlash, a few Chinese netizens came to Messi's defense, pointing out that he had previously visited mainland China and behaved appropriately during that time. They argued that Messi's actions in Hong Kong were unexpected and that it was unfair to compare him to other athletes who had exhibited better behavior.

Following the Hong Kong match, Messi and his Inter Miami teammates headed to Tokyo to face off against Kawasaki Frontale in another friendly match. The Argentine player actively participated in the training session, as reported by Japanese media outlet Football-Zone. During the training, Messi was quoted as saying, "I will determine my physical condition during this afternoon's practice."

Despite the controversy, it remains to be seen whether Messi's actions will have any long-term impact on his reputation in Asia. As the football superstar continues to adjust to life in the MLS, fans and critics alike will be closely watching his performance on and off the field.
