According to the Russian Investigative Committee, the four attackers arrived at the concert hall in two vehicles at 6:54 PM local time, waiting for the audience to gather before opening fire on civilians near the venue and then entering the building and shooting indiscriminately at concertgoers, killing and wounding dozens.
The attackers also used plastic fuel containers to start fires, according to investigators. The attackers fled the scene in a vehicle, causing an accident that injured two children, and were later apprehended in the Bryansk region of Russia near the border with Ukraine.
Two AK-74 automatic rifles, over 500 rounds of ammunition, 28 ammunition clips, and several gasoline containers were found at the crime scene, and investigators discovered fabric fragments, tools, and other evidence used to prepare for the attack in the suspects' homes.
In a video statement, Putin maintained that a Western-backed Ukraine could have been behind the attack, despite evidence suggesting that the attackers had ties to extremist religious groups. Russian forces have been accused of torturing suspects in the case, including one individual who reportedly received electric shocks to their genitals, according to a New York Post article. The investigation into the attack has also led to the arrest of three additional individuals who are accused of assisting in the preparation of the attack, including providing housing and transportation for the suspects.
The response to the attack has been widespread, with many expressing outrage and calling for justice for the victims. A video circulating on social media showed a large crowd of people lining up to place flowers in memory of the victims at the scene of the attack, with many expressing frustration and anger towards the perpetrators. Despite the convictions, the question of who was behind the attack remains, with some speculating that the attack was orchestrated by a foreign power or extremist group. The investigation into the attack is ongoing, and it is unclear whether the individuals convicted of carrying out the attack will provide further information about those responsible for planning and financing the attack. The aftermath of the attack has also raised concerns about the potential for escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with some speculating that the attack could be used as a pretext for military action. The Russian government has denied any involvement in the attack and has called for a thorough investigation into the incident. Regardless of who was behind the attack, the tragic loss of life and the devastating impact on the victims and their families cannot be ignored. As the investigation continues, it is crucial that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice and that measures are taken to prevent similar attacks from happening in the future.
