On November 8th, at 2:22 am, the Zhongshan Second Hospital of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital (the second hospital attached to Sun Yat-sen University) published a notification in response to rumors circulating on the internet regarding alleged cancer cases amongst employees in the Breast Surgery Department. The hospital promptly investigated and initially found that the involved individuals were not students but rather three young employees, which raised questions about the lack of explanation from the hospital towards their situation.

According to media reports, a tutor from the Breast Surgery Department of the Second Hospital Affiliated to Sun Yat-sen University had students diagnosed with rare cancers. Upon reporters' arrival at Zhongshan Second Hospital North on November 7th, they found that the mentioned tutor, Su Shicheng, was still working normally despite the circulating posts. The hospital's notice listed cancer types as pancreatic cancer, breast cancer, and syringoblastoma; however, netizens attributed these cancers to the hospital and its staff or teachers/schools, sparking debates on who should be held responsible for employees' health issues.

Zhongshan Second Hospital released a statement denying rumors of experimental environments causing cancer amongst their staff. Despite the notice provided by the hospital, it remains unclear how many patients are at risk due to environmental exposure to carcinogens in research projects. These concerns highlight the need for responsible investigation and accountability towards potential harm caused to others.

The investigation results revealed that three individuals diagnosed with cancer had intersections of studying or working at the Breast Cancer Center Laboratory, confirming their time of diagnosis as 2023, with two of them possibly being co-authors in a shared article
