India Ends Korea's 28-Year Asian Games Archery Reign as China Takes Gold and a Los Angeles Berth

South Korea's women's archery team, champions at every Asian Games since 1998, lost the final to India on a day when Korea's 'dream team' also fell 0-6 to China — who then beat India for mixed-team gold and an automatic Olympic quota place.

The scoreboard read 5-3, and a dynasty was over. In the women's recurve team final at the Nagoya Asian Games, India beat South Korea — a team that had won every Asian Games women's team title since 1998, seven consecutively, and whose dominance on Chinese sports boards is compared to China's own in diving. The loss was the centre of a remarkable day: in the mixed-team semi-final the same morning, China eliminated Korea 6-0, and Korea's entire archery programme finished these Games with one gold, one silver and one bronze — its biggest upset of the meet, as Baidu's hot board put it at No. 2.

These Games have been hard on dynasties. Japan ended China's 36-year reign in men's table tennis last week; now the sport where nobody dared beat Korea for a generation has produced its own upset, and Chinese readers know precisely what such a fall means — they have spent the week celebrating the other kind of streak.

China's own business on the range was settled hours later. In the mixed-team final, Zhu Jingyi and Li Mengqi beat India's pair 5-3 — by set scores of 38-34, 37-35, 36-37 and, in a tie that went to the last arrows, 37-37 — to take gold. The medal came with more than a podium place: the win secured China a direct qualification quota for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, plus one automatic individual berth each for a man and a woman.

Zhu Jingyi had already shot once that day: in the morning she was part of China's women's team — with Huang Yuwei and Yu Qi — that took bronze by beating Indonesia 6-2, on the wrong side of the India-Korea final. Two medals, one of each colour, shot in a single day.

For the hosts of the podium ceremony, the placard said what mattered most: "ON TARGET — QUOTA SECURED". China's 156th gold of these Asian Games is, in substance, a ticket to Los Angeles — while Korean archery, for the first time in 28 years, leaves an Asian Games team final to someone else. Whether India's win marks a durable shift or one afternoon of Korean fragility is the question the next world championships will answer; China, for its part, no longer has to.
