Yang Hansen Gets His Rotation Minutes as the West-Leading Blazers Meet the Lakers

In Portland's top-of-the-Western-Conference NBA Cup game against the Los Angeles Lakers, second-year centre Yang Hansen played meaningful rotation minutes for the first time this season — drew a foul on Walker Kessler, held his own against Luka Doncic, and heard about it all from Damian Lillard.

For three minutes and one second of Portland's NBA Cup game against the Los Angeles Lakers, Yang Hansen was not a curiosity in a suit. The second-year centre from China entered late in the first half of a first-place-vs-first-place matchup, posted up the Jazz's Walker Kessler — the very defender drafted ahead of comparisons all pre-season — drew a foul and made both free throws, then took two turns guarding Luka Doncic, one with a weakside rotation, one with a hedge after an ICE pick-and-roll call.

The stat line was modest: two points. The significance was not. A national-basketball report circulated at the end of October said Portland's management, after the season's first stretch, wants Yang given more minutes as the third centre, with his development plan made more specific — concrete targets for offence and defence rather than a vague promise — and that the club changed its plan to leave him in Portland during this road trip, bringing him along instead. The Lakers game looks like the first instalment.

Chinese commentators watched the possessions frame by frame. Broadcaster Guan Weijia's game notes praised the Doncic defensive possessions and the drawn foul, but singled out the flaw that matters: a botched floater after a pick-and-roll slip, the ball lost on the drive. "For a big man who doesn't live on athleticism, the floater has to be drilled and used," he wrote — and noted that it was that possession Damian Lillard pulled Yang aside to discuss on the bench.

The context makes the minutes plausible rather than token. Portland sits atop the Western Conference, and the game itself delivered the spectacle Chinese feeds replayed all afternoon: Dončić's cross-court, over-the-shoulder buzzer-beater from beyond half-time distance at the end of the second quarter. Yang's rookie season, by contrast, was quiet — 43 games, one start, 6.9 minutes a night, 2.2 points — which is precisely why the club's October directive to define his role drew attention. When we covered Portland picking up his third-year option two weeks ago, the bet was structural; this was the first night it showed up in the rotation.

The next test is repetition: rotation minutes in a playoff-calibre team's frontcourt are earned by avoiding mistakes in the stretch the commentators call the "basic plate" — the unglamorous possessions that keep a coach's trust. Yang's own account of the evening, when he gives one, will matter less than whether the three minutes become six.
